Meet Steve Bacon

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Steve Bacon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Steve, we are so deeply grateful to you for opening up about your journey with mental health in the hops that it can help someone who might be going through something similar. Can you talk to us about your mental health journey and how you overcame or persisted despite any issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.

By the time I was 18 years old, I had built up years of anger, resentment, hurt, fear, etc. from a childhood filled with violence, trauma, neglect and abuse. This led me to a point where I attempted to take my own life by putting a loaded shotgun in my mouth and pulling the trigger. Luckily for me, the gun didn’t fire which was an absolute miracle in of itself. It was in that moment I experienced instant regret because I realized I didn’t want to die, I just didn’t know how to live.

A few years later, after getting into trouble with the law and being sentenced to 10 years probation, I met a gentlemen named Hank who gave me a ride from the courthouse back to my house. During that car ride, he said something to me that changed the course of my life. He said, “Young man, if you just change what you believe about yourself everything will change.” To be honest, at 20 years old I had no idea what he meant but I knew that my way of living wasn’t working.

I knew two things: one, I didn’t want to die, and two, I didn’t want to live a long, miserable life either. It was after that conversation that he introduced me to the concept of personal development and started exposing me to what life could look like if I was willing to face myself, challenge everything that I believed, and took responsibility for everything that occurred in my life. He then introduced me to the concept of creating a vision of who I wanted to be and how I wanted to live and devote the rest of my life to making that vision a reality.

Holding that vision in the forefront of my mind every day, challenging every small thought I had about myself, and recreating a new self image is what helped me to overcome and persist despite the challenges I was facing. Other things that helped me persevere was having the Faith that I could be better and believing that what I was experiencing in the moment isn’t what God had shown me for the vision for my life, therefore it was temporary. It was that understanding of everything being temporary that allowed me to look at each challenge and say what the old folks used to tell me, “this too shall pass”.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The qualities of curiosity and a willingness to self-assess coupled with the area of knowledge in the human belief system were the most impactful in my journey.

The advice I would give someone is to be open and willing to face yourself and to learn and understand as much about themselves as possible. Pay close attention to every small thought about yourself that enters your mind and trace it back to the beliefs/events in your childhood that produced those thoughts. It’s not always easy, but it is worth it if you want to set yourself emotionally and mentally free to be who you want to be without it feeling like it’s hard.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

My advice and strategies for feeling overwhelmed would be to start with a mind dump. This is writing down every thought that is in my head until I have no thoughts left. Then take out all of the “to-do” thoughts and put them on a different sheet of paper. Separate that list into two categories: things I have control over and things I do not have control over. The list that you have no control over I ball it up, throw it away or burn it since there is no point in going over that list because I have no control so I completely let go and let God. Then I take the list of what I do have control over and prioritize it in order of importance then calendarize it into what needs to get done that day, within the next few days, and within the next few weeks. This helps me to realize that not everything needs to get done right then or that day.

What typically causes overwhelm is all of the “to-do’s” swimming around in your head and the thoughts that you don’t have enough time to do it all. When the truth is, half of the things on your which means you don’t need to worry about it at all because it’s out of your hands anyways and trust that the Divine order is always in order. Overwhelm simply means you have too many priorities and writing them down is a must because you can only focus on one thought at a time so trying to organize it in your head is impossible.
