We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Steve Baughman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Steve below.

Hi Steve, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I’m Steven Baughman, and my journey to discovering my purpose as a music producer and mixing/mastering engineer has been quite a remarkable adventure. Being adopted into a family of music teachers in Sacramento, California, set the stage for my lifelong connection with music. My classical training laid the foundation for my deep understanding of musical intricacies.

My fascination with production began at an early age when I started recording my friends using a 4-track setup I put together in my closet. Those humble beginnings fueled my passion and determination to delve deeper into the world of music. Pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Recording Arts at California State University, Chico, allowed me to refine my skills and expand my horizons.

The turning point came in 1995 when I made the move to Los Angeles, the heart of the music industry. Starting from the ground up, I worked my way through various studios, each experience shaping my expertise and solidifying my dedication to the craft. Eventually, my hard work paid off with the incredible honor of winning a Grammy award.

Collaborating with iconic artists like Michael Jackson, The Pussycat Dolls, Usher, and others, was a dream come true. These experiences not only enriched my skills but also reinforced my passion for creating exceptional music. In 2015, I co-founded Next Level Mastering, a space where I continue to nurture my creative energy and work with some of the most influential artists of today.

My journey, rooted in my family’s musical legacy and driven by an unyielding passion for music production, has been an incredible ride. It’s a testament to the power of following one’s heart and embracing opportunities, ultimately leading me to discover my true purpose in the world of music.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My creative process is a dynamic blend of technical expertise and artistic intuition. When I embark on a new project, whether it’s mastering for an established artist or producing for someone with a fresh perspective, I approach it with a deep sense of collaboration and an open mind.

The journey usually begins with extensive conversations with the artist or team, where I strive to understand their vision, sonic preferences, and the emotional narrative they wish to convey through their music. This initial step is crucial as it lays the foundation for the entire project.

Once I’ve absorbed the essence of the project, I move into the technical phase. For mixing, I meticulously balance and shape each individual track, ensuring that every instrument and vocal finds its perfect place in the sonic landscape. I aim to create a cohesive and immersive sonic experience that resonates with the intended emotions.

In the mastering phase, my focus shifts to refining the overall sound of the project. I address issues related to clarity, dynamics, and consistency across all tracks. The goal here is to elevate the music to its fullest potential while maintaining the artist’s unique identity.

What’s truly exciting about this process is the opportunity to collaborate with diverse artists, each with their own distinct style. Whether it’s bringing out the raw emotion in a ballad or amplifying the energy in an uptempo track, I’m continuously challenged to adapt my techniques to suit the specific needs of each project.

In essence, my creative process is an ever-evolving dance between technology and artistry. It’s about harnessing the power of cutting-edge tools while never losing sight of the emotional core that makes music so impactful. With every project, I strive to create a sonic masterpiece that not only meets technical standards but also speaks to the hearts of listeners.

Currently, I’m excited to be working with some exceptional talents. I’ve been involved in mastering for the incredibly talented Brent Faiyaz, an experience that pushed my creative boundaries and allowed me to contribute to his artistry in a meaningful way. Additionally, I’ve had the privilege of handling the mixing and mastering process for Ro James, another artist whose work is truly revolutionary.

Looking ahead, my partner Alex Elena and I are taking our talents to our studio in Rome, Italy. We’re collaborating with the incredibly gifted Fiona Grey on a project that promises to be extraordinary. This endeavor under Two Beards Productions not only fuels our creative spirits but also allows us to capture the essence of a new environment and infuse it into our music, creating something truly unique.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, there are three key qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge that have been immensely impactful:

Listening: The art of listening is fundamental in music production. I honed this skill through my experience playing in orchestras, where harmony and unity are paramount. Truly understanding how various elements come together to create a harmonious whole has greatly influenced my work as a music producer. To those starting their journey, I recommend actively engaging in collaborative musical environments, learning to listen deeply, and appreciating the nuances that contribute to the bigger picture.

Technical Audio Expertise: Acquiring a solid foundation in technical audio knowledge during my college years has been pivotal. This expertise empowers me to navigate the intricate world of sound, from capturing pristine recordings to sculpting the perfect mix. Aspiring audio professionals should invest time in formal education, workshops, and hands-on experience to grasp the technical intricacies that underpin their craft.

Open-Minded Collaboration: Recognizing that music thrives on collaboration has been transformative. Embracing an open mind and understanding that diverse perspectives enrich creativity has shaped my approach to every project. Early career individuals should actively seek out opportunities to work alongside those who possess different skill sets and perspectives. Recognizing that growth often emerges from collaboration and the exchange of ideas.

For those at the beginning of their journey, I offer this advice: Surround yourself with individuals who excel in your field. If you find yourself as the most skilled person in a room, it’s a sign that you’re not in the right environment to push your limits. Seek out mentors, peers, and colleagues who challenge and inspire you. Learning from those who are further along in their journey can accelerate your growth and broaden your horizons.

In essence, the combination of active listening, technical proficiency, and a collaborative mindset forms the foundation of a successful journey in music production. Strive to be a perpetual student, continuously learning and evolving, and never hesitate to venture into new territories that stretch your abilities.
