We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Steve Gregory. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Steve below.
Steve , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
That’s an interesting question.
I’ve been motivated by music, and guitar playing for a long time. I was driven to get better and learn more from a young age. I loved listening and trying to figure things out on the instrument. I’m not sure if I’d call it a purpose, but it was certainly a focus.
After many years of being in the industry, I’ve worked in many situations, on many projects, and sometimes questioned whether what I was doing was important, or if it was worthwhile, valued, and something I should continue to do. I wondered if it was too self indulgent, One situation I play music in, is at church. I love playing at church, as I feel it is something good and worthwhile. I love worshipping, not only to praise God, and draw nearer to Him, but to participate with others in doing the same. I love being part of the community, and welcoming people to it.
After getting married not too long ago, I’ve also found purpose in supporting my wife in various ways, and trying to better myself to become a good husband.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Sure, so what I do.
Over the years I have toured with many different acts. Ray Charles was my first big tour. Then Frankie Valli. I’ve also toured with great fusion drummer Alphonse Mouzon, Gordon Goodwin’s Phat Band, and Anjani with special guest Leonard Cohen.
I’ve recorded on many TV shows, commercials, and artists records. Some of the more recent recordings I’ve played on are with Janis Siegel, renowned for her work with Manhattan Transfer, and great jazz singer Tierney Sutton, both with the San Gabriel Seven, which is a Los Angeles based group consisting of some great studio musicians. I’m also currently recording some guitar at my home studio for a wonderful singer/songwriter from Australia named Melissa Tallon. She’s lesser known, but worth checking out, as she writes such great songs, and sings so beautifully.
Just this year I achieved a long-time goal of releasing my own album, of all original music. It’s been quite a journey! It’s something that if I had recorded years ago would have been a different record. Its inspired by a lot of different music I’ve enjoyed over the years, including jazz, folk, soul, rock. I describe the vibe as earthy, soulful instrumentals. I had some of LA’s best musicians and engineers contributing their talents to the record, including Jeff Babko on keys, Ray Brinker on drums, and Eric Sittner on bass, as well as Talley Sherwood mixing, and Peter Doell mastering. I feel really great about getting it out there, and we’ve received a lot of great reviews and radio play. It’s available on all the major streaming platforms.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Well, I wish I knew then what I know now!! I’m always trying to improve, not just musically, but on how I interact with others, and just trying to be more disciplined, understanding, respectful in general. I can see how developing those skills earlier on could have helped me progress career-wise.
So, my advice for folks early in their journey, is yes, work on your craft for sure. Be great at it. Make yourself valuable. Effort and dedication are more beneficial than natural ability. But apart from being excellent at the craft, just try to be the best person you can be. So many people in this business are fake friends; meaning they want to be nice because they think you can help them, and if they don’t think that, they don’t care. I think if one can put that aside, and just be genuine and sincere in trying to be the best person you can, in all you do, that will go a long way.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client would communicate the specifics, like time, location, expectations, budget. They would have good music, professional band members, be easy to get along with and enjoy the process. The basics!
