Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Steve Walters. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Steve, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
You only gain confidence by overcoming fear. The only way to do that is by facing what you’re afraid of. I’m old enough now and have enough experience in life to know that when I face something scary, I can figure it out—just hold my chest high, smile, and walk in like I know what I’m doing. I know I’ll be able to figure it out. Sometimes, you just have to “fake it until you make it.” You don’t need to have all the answers. Uncertainty is always part of the journey. Daring to dive in and figure t out to win- even while faking confidence—has helped me a lot in my career. Others are looking to you to be confident and capable, so embrace that challenge even if you feel unsure. Adopt a mindset of “I can do this, and I will figure it out.” This mindset has fueled my career, and I believe it can help you succeed too.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
When I took on the role of General Manager of the Duluth Harbor Monsters with just a logo and a dream, my goal was to build a brand that I, my team, my family, and our city could all be proud of. What started as a bold startup quickly evolved into a vibrant sports and entertainment ecosystem, thriving on creativity, relentless energy, and a shared vision. Each day, I wake up excited for the challenges ahead and the opportunity to make a lasting impact on Duluth and the greater Twin Ports region.
By forging genuine connections with local businesses and national brands, we established partnerships that fueled our growth and deeply embedded the Harbor Monsters into the community’s fabric. These alliances, along with marketing campaigns that resonated with our fans’ passions, transformed casual spectators into loyal supporters. Winning back-to-back championships also helps 🙂
Today, as we stand on the brink of a third championship campaign, our journey feels nothing short of extraordinary. From a fledgling franchise to a defending champion, our story is woven with belief, grit, and unwavering effort. Each milestone honors the countless hours dedicated by players, coaches, and fans who never lost faith in our vision. As we look to the future, I carry the promise of even greater chapters—where every tackle, every cheer, and every partnership continues to highlight the power of community, ambition, and teamwork.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I’ll give you my two most important pieces of advice:
First, recognize that the most powerful asset you can build isn’t your resume or skill set—it’s your network of relationships. While expertise can be acquired over time, the connections you cultivate today will become the bridges to tomorrow’s opportunities. Those connections will open doors you never knew existed.
Equally important is the mindset of stepping boldly into the unknown. You don’t have to have all the answers before you begin; uncertainty is simply part of the adventure. Embrace a “fake it until you make it” attitude, not as a shortcut, but as a declaration of confidence in your ability to learn on the fly. Tell yourself, “I can do this, and I will figure it out,” and then lean into each challenge with resilience. Over time, that belief in yourself becomes reality.

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I know that it is more important to be well-rounded rather than a person with a specifically focused skillset—at least in my type of role and in my life’s experience. As someone who enjoys throwing himself into the adventure of a new start-up, you’d better be able to wear many hats. Even if you’re not an expert at a particular task, you need to learn how to do it well for yourself and for those counting on you.
