We were lucky to catch up with Steven Bennett recently and have shared our conversation below.
Steven, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I’m not sure. I do believe I am resilient because I’m quite stubborn and won’t let anything or anyone tell me what I can or can’t do without my say so, and I think I’ve always been that way since day one. That’s something innate within me. The fact that I’m still here, putting myself out there every day trying something new to do anything to be seen and perform definitely shows my resilience, but I don’t know where it comes from. I think it’s genetic and something I’ve had and always had. My mom and family members are very resilient. It takes a lot for us to be taken down or give up. But I love that about us!

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a performer! Really, I’m an artist, with a total need to express myself creatively. But that creative expression has manifested over the years. I’ve always been a performer and entertainer since I was a child. Pretty much nothing fulfills me more or brings me more joy than entertaining people. Making someone’s day better through music, or bringing people joy through comedy – nothing makes me happier. Without performing, I feel hollow, useless. It’s something I have to do. Which can torment me without, but I love it, I wouldn’t change anything about being an artist for better or worse.
When I haven’t had performing opportunities, I’ve found a lot of recent joy through art forms that aren’t necessarily being on a stage or having an audience. Creating or expressing something through modeling, writing, original music or production has brought me a lot of fulfillment too. It’s what made me feel like a fully-rounded artist lately.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
When I was younger, it felt like I was useless if I wasn’t performing. I felt like I was a waste of life, not to be dramatic. I learned in time that not only was that not a sustainable, realistic way of life, but actually it made me a better artist to step back. I know it was told to me before, but I really had to experience it to believe it. Being a well-rounded human makes me a better performer, actor, artist, what have you. Living life to the fullest, experiencing and feeling everything I can, good or bad, makes me better. I don’t know how but it does.
I guess also taking a step back from performing gives me room to think about what I want to do next or what other mediums will come to me to express myself. But going from project to project not only will fatigue you, but you kind of lose your voice in what you want to say. It’s beautiful and inspiring to take a break. I say all of this also knowing I can’t go more than three months without feeling ready for the next thing HA!

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Oh, I love collaboration! It’s one of the best things about my art form. I actually crave collaboration. I love to go off my instinct and be the boss of my own creative expression, but I do always look for constructive creative criticism and guidance. What did you think? What can be better about it? Any different direction? Etc. But yeah, I love to collaborate. I’m always looking for collaborators especially musically. I’m actually working to create my own demo/ EP of either reworked cover songs or original songs or both! I love musical collaborators and arrangers who are open to improv and being in the moment. We can create something amazing that never could’ve been preconceived, but it just came out of thin air from two people locked in to the same frequency of music in the moment. That’s one of my favorite things in the world. It’s hard to describe unless you’ve experienced it.
