We recently connected with Steven Martin and have shared our conversation below.
Steven, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
From 2005 through 2007 I found myself homeless. Those were the toughest years of my life. It was then that I found God. Knowing that I couldn’t of have persevered by myself reminds me my walk isn’t alone. I strongly believe he laid the foundation and path of which I stand on today. No matter what lies ahead, I’m optimistic because I know like he made a way for me then he still works now.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
When I started my company EcoTopia pest control it was manifested by my love for the industry. After being in pest control for six years my favorite part was knowing I made a difference protecting a family’s home. Having the ability to do a job I love and call it my own is the biggest blessing. Our mission is to provide the most effective and safest service for our customers. We are quickly becoming known for our eco-friendly and organic services. Which means we treat with the newest botanical and green zone products on the market today. Our reputation and commitment to transparency means everything. This is a reflection of our five star Google reviews. When we hear such positive feedback it makes me even more motivated to out due my performance on the next service. My passion for protecting homes safely and creating opportunities as we grow wakes me up with a smile everyday.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The first step in launching my business was believing in myself in order to take the biggest risk in my life. So yes, you have to be a risk taker in order to see how far you can go in life. Another important quality is having the ability to troubleshoot. Not every scenario is going to have the answer right in front of you. You have to be able to make since of the pieces you have to work with in order to complete the task at hand and overcome unforseen obstacles. Last but definitely not least my work ethic. My work ethic doesn’t allow for subpar results. It has to be the best…. PERIOD. Having a client be able to purchase the same results somewhere else is my nightmare. I compete with myself everyday to be better and better. A strong work ethic won’t allow anything less than perfect every single day. My advise for future entrepreneurs is one, know your customer. Knowing where your customer base is, what are they use to paying and how to reach them is crucial. Second is know the market of the field you are in. Knowing what your competition advertisies, the market prices and market expectations. And last but not least, love what you do. Tough times are in every entrepreneurs forecast. Money won’t be a big enough reason to push through. But a passion and love for what you do will be.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
Encouraged me to dream. My mother told me once, ‘the day you stop dreaming is the day dreams end’. I’m a dreamer and always have been. If you can vision it then you can chase it.
