We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Steven Morse a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Steven, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My parents and journey through athletics.
I grew up in a household where both parents went to work every day, still do and I’m very proud of that. I learned early on from my parents and coaches that the ability to be intrinsically motivated is a worthy trait. This motivation has always been a driving force in my personal, athletic and professional career, and I feel is a critical component in developing a strong work ethic.
I also learned throughout my maturation that if your truly passionate about what you do, the process of working hard can be enjoyable. Those close to me know how much value I place on my personal and professional goals. Being passionate about continuing to improve these areas of my life make the work much easier, enjoyable and achievable.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Since I turned 22 years old, my professional career has revolved around college baseball.
I began my coaching career in 2014 as the Recruiting Coordinator at SUNY Brockport, then shortly after in 2016, accepted the position as Head Baseball Coach at SUNY Ulster. During my time at Ulster, our baseball program was recognized as one of the top Junior Colleges in the northeast, and in 2019 our season concluded as the Region XV champion, finishing a game outside of the NJCAA World Series. This success and optimism around our program then granted me the opportunity to begin scouting professionally with the San Diego Padres.
In August of 2020, I began to look into the NCAA transfer portal and saw 2,000+ college baseball player’s unsure on where to go, and if they’ll ever get an opportunity to play again. Seeing and understanding the number of student-athletes that were misguided in their college recruitment process is what provided me the motivation to begin my current business, Recruit U.
Recruit U is a service provided to maximize college athletic offers, scholarship opportunities and provide guidance and advisement throughout the recruiting process. We create a personalized recruiting program and work collaboratively with both you and college coaches to help provide the best opportunity to select the student-athlete experience of your dreams. We provide an initial player evaluation, construct a college target list and begin all communication with college coaches of the programs we collectively see are a potential fit.
Advisement on the player’s skill set, strength and conditioning and nutrition are area’s we’ve expanded our services to this past year and has been a great addition to what we do. I see it now as our advisors are providing guidance into building a college prospect as opposed to simply guiding them in the college recruiting process.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three important skills I would highlight are self-discipline, intrinsic motivation and leadership.
Three athlete’s I spend a lot of time researching and listening too are Tom Brady, Michael Jordan and Derek Jeter. These skills are a commonality between all three of these high-level winners.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
My biggest area of growth in the last twelve months would be understanding the value behind taking a risk. That’s a term that’s used often, but in a business sense was a hurdle for me to overcome.
I began Recruit U with the intent to stay involved in college athletics and try and help a few guys I came across find a place to play. Four years later, and now we have multiple college advisors working under our brand, have serviced over 200 student-athletes nationwide and have intentions of expanding into other business avenues and ventures in the near future.
Moral of the story…find something your passionate about, put your head down and be grateful for the obstacles you have to overcome.
At the end of the day, my family, small circle of friends and my business are really the only things that matter to me.
Understanding that has led me to put more effort into those people or areas of my life, and has led to our most successful year yet with Recruit U!
