We were lucky to catch up with Steven Sutherland recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Steven, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
This is a loaded question. My resilience comes from several pivotal moments in my life that have shaped who I am today. If I had to sum it up in a single statement, it comes from tragedy, and the way tragedy can inspire.
When I was 14, I lost my dad to suicide. He left behind a three page note, and within it, 66 words were just for me. He told me not to keep things bottled up. I always found it interesting that he understood too well the damage of silence while he himself was suffering the worst consequence from it. Then he wrote, “I know you’ll be a great actor someday.”
Those words have stayed with me. They’ve inspired me to push through whatever I might be feeling in any given moment and to hold true to my principles above all else.
We can only truly be resilient when we are going against a force. I believe it’s important to live a life finding comfort in the most uncomfortable situations. It’s in those we learn and grow the most. It’s in those moments, we inspire the most.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’ve spent the past 14+ years pursuing my passion as an actor, which has taken me from faith-based films like Ashes of Eden and Surrender to commercials, music videos, and most recently a role in Wild Faith Christmas. Acting has always been more than just a career path for me, it’s been a calling. I truly believe God placed it on my heart to inspire people through storytelling, and every role I take on is an opportunity to do that.
Alongside acting, I’ve also built a YouTube channel called Steven’s Mind, where I do music reactions with a focus on connection, faith, and authenticity. The channel has grown quickly, and what excites me most is hearing from viewers who say my videos have helped them through tough days. It’s become another outlet for me to live out my mission of encouraging others,
Outside of being an actor and working on YouTube. I am currently writing an autobiography about my life. It’s sort of a being born in the storm and learning how to dance in the rain theme. Failing Forward and persevering through rough moments.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three of the most important qualities or skills… I would say one of the biggest “non secrets,” but less talked about keys to success, is being likable. But you cannot try to be likable. It really boils down to how genuine you are and how well you care for those around you.
Integrity is another big one. Standing on business. I’d like to think I’m not the type to waver from my faith or strong principles just to fit into this world. I believe it’s important, especially as a man, to stand up for what you believe in. NF has a line in one of his songs: “Push all you want, I ain’t moving an inch.” That line always comes to mind when I feel life’s pressures trying to make me stumble or compromise who I am and what I believe in.
The third quality I’d highlight is my ability to understand human emotion. Having empathy for others is huge, especially as an actor. Understanding the heart and what makes it tick in different situations is a powerful skill, and it comes from stepping outside yourself, being present with others, and truly listening. Learning to live outside of your own box, and not getting in your own way, is one of the most valuable lessons I’ve carried with me.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’ve written several feature length scripts and a short film that I would love to bring to life someday. My goal is to eventually collaborate with others to make them a reality. I’m passionate about creating gritty, real stories with a meaningful message, clean but never corny, raw but never fake. Stories that are emotional, encouraging, and deeply rooted in faith.
