Meet Su Lee

We were lucky to catch up with Su Lee recently and have shared our conversation below.

Su , thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?

My discipline comes from observing and taking inspiration from other people’s work styles and patterns. I recently had this epiphany that it’s super duper crucial to get input from other fellow artists as much as my own output as an artist.
I’m someone whose values self-sufficiency and is somewhat of a natural workaholic. That might work for some time, but it also makes me prone to falling into the trap of just create, create, create and never really allowing myself to take inspiration from other artists & musicians.
A little trick I have to boost my self discipline is that I put on vlogs or documentaries of other artists on silent when I’m working on new music in the studio. Whenever I feel like slacking off, I glance at the TV and it motivates me to keep working hard like my idols.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m a musician! I write a lot about mental health issues or personal struggles I get in navigating through my adulthood.
As somebody who unfortunately hasn’t had much success with therapy, I find that writing songs helps me immensely in processing and making sense of these pretty intense feelings that come with life.
I find that when I give myself the constraint of feeling my feelings only in the context of writing music, I can somehow bring more humor and brevity to it all.

I recently finished an album that we’re planning on putting out in the next coming month or two. I produced and wrote all of the tracks and it sounds pretty drastically different from any of my other music I’ve put out. So I’m really excited to have people listen to the new sound and style when the album comes out.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Some basic knowledge and/or vision on aesthetics and design helps. I majored in graphic design in college and having the skill sets to edit videos and do photo works helped immensely.

Learning how to produce my own music also turned out to be a really useful skill. In this day and age, you can learn everything on YouTube and it never hurts to have the ability to create everything from scratch by yourself.

Lastly – this one is something I’m still learning myself – the importance of honing your self confidence and self appreciation. Whatever industry you’re in, I think people are drawn to anybody who’s got a clear sense of self and knows what they want.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

Book called “Daily Rituals” by Mason Currey. It’s almost like a directory of “day in a life” of notable writers or artists in history. It’s incredibly enlightening to see that every individual has such unique habits and work schedules to fit their creative needs.
