Meet Sue Prescott

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sue Prescott. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sue below.

Hi Sue, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
As a Wedding and Events planner with over 20 years of experience, imposter syndrome is something that I’ve had to overcome throughout my career. When I first started out in this industry, I often found myself lacking confidence in my talents and skills. I would constantly compare myself to other planners and second-guess my decisions. It wasn’t until I realized that many of my colleagues also experienced these feelings that I began to understand that imposter syndrome is a common issue. One of the ways I combated this feeling was by joining professional groups and clubs, where I found support from other planners in the industry. By connecting with others who had been in my shoes before, I was able to gain perspective and feel less alone in my struggles. Focusing on my strengths and accomplishments, and viewing mistakes and setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow, also helped me shift my mindset and gain more confidence in my abilities. Lastly, prioritizing self-care and personal development allowed me to stay grounded and centered. While imposter syndrome can be a difficult hurdle to overcome, with time and practice, you can achieve success in your career.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a professional wedding and event planner with a passion for creating memorable experiences. What I find most exciting about my job is the ability to bring people together to celebrate and create special moments that will last a lifetime. As an Orange County-based event planner, I have been fortunate to work with a wide variety of clients ranging from intimate gatherings to large-scale corporate events. My approach to event planning is to ensure that every detail is executed flawlessly, from the initial concept and design to the final execution. I work closely with my clients to understand their vision and preferences, and I pride myself on delivering a high-quality service that exceeds their expectations. I am currently in the process of expanding my team and increasing my capacity.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I believe that the three most impactful qualities/skills that helped me achieve success were resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to learn. As a business owner, I faced challenges and setbacks, but I never gave up. Instead, I learned from my mistakes, adapted to new situations, and continued to educate myself on industry trends and best practices. For those early in their journey, I would advise them to focus on developing these same qualities. Resilience is essential because there will certainly be obstacles and setbacks, but it’s important to keep pushing forward. Adaptability is also key because the business is constantly changing, and you must be willing to pivot and change direction when necessary. Finally, a willingness to learn is crucial because the event world is always evolving, and it’s important to stay current and continue to grow. I would encourage early career professionals to join any local planner groups or the chamber of commerce in order to network.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
I think my ideal client is someone who is looking for a unique and unforgettable event. They are open to new ideas and creative designs, while also having a clear vision and budget for their event. Also, it is helpful if the client is organized and communicative, allowing for a smooth planning process. Additionally, they value and respect my expertise and experience in the industry, and are willing to trust me to bring their vision to life. Ultimately, my ideal client is excited to collaborate with me to create a memorable event that reflects their personality and style.
