We were lucky to catch up with Suede Silver recently and have shared our conversation below.
Suede, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I don’t think creativity is as elusive as people make it… the more you create, the more creative you become. I think everyone has immense capacity to be creative, but many get hung up on insecurity… They don’t want to see themselves or have others see them doing anything short of remarkable. But anyone who’s very creative will tell you that 9/10 attempts are trash, especially at first. But the point isn’t to show off everything you do to everyone, it’s to participate in the creating; to become someone who creates, and reaches towards their potential in contributing to humanity.
Just put a sharpie to paper and see what comes out, you can just throw it away, no one has to see it, but just doing it – creating anything – leaving a mark – is every humans right and responsibly. Write anything down, strum a chord, build a lil structure, cook something new, just create anything and the more you do it, the more you’ll love it and the more you’ll find your spark and discover yourself and your place on earth. And when you do stumble upon something that really makes you smile, please, for all of us, share it =)
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m launching a recording studio that focuses on recording straight to analog gear, to inspire artists more, and help find more humanity and magic in music.
It’s very influenced by motown and how recordings were conducted in that era. The ultimate goal is for every artists that steps though the doors here to feel a renewed sense of inspiration for their craft & journey, and walk away with something they’re proud of.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
– Desire to learn and grow / staying curious and humble
– Don’t neglect the business side if you’re an artist, and vice versa
– If you can focus, you’ll win at whatever you choose to do
– (bonus) success is creating your perfect lifestyle, its not a destination
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
Right now I’m working on building the recording studio to be the vision in my head. It’s not there yet… but it’s workable. Im finding it hard to find the balance between being in “build mode”, and “make music mode”. Both are equally important and timely right now, I don’t want to lean too hard in either direction. I’m trying to just trust my instinct and the process.
