We recently connected with Sugar Joiko and have shared our conversation below.
Sugar, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I believe I get my work ethic from my mother and grandmother, who both worked very hard to make sure my siblings and I had a good life to pursue our dreams and success.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Sugar Joiko and I am a full-time musician, pop artist and record producer. I feel blessed to work in just about every capacity of live music entertainment. From original concert shows, to high status private events, including working with other artists in the studio.
My current biggest project has been the creation of the JoiLux Band during COVID. We are trending as one of Houston’s Best Variety cover bands for corporate, private and festival events. Not only has this group helped me and great musicians survive through the pandemic, it also makes me happy to bring joy to guests and music lovers alike as we perform their favorite tunes on stage. We are known for our high energy, crowd engaging shows.
I am excited to share that we are working with Rise Rooftop to throw our first “The Best of the 90’s Tribute Concert” next month on Thursday, September 21st. The event will feature a wide variety of hits from boyband pop to alternative rock, hip-hop, country, and of course, the birth of “oontz oontz” dance music pioneered by black women singers in the 90s. The event is also a 90’s costume party. Tickets go on sale on Monday, August 14th.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The most important pieces of knowledge I apply to my life’s work is “love who you are when you’re creating”, “the only way to fail is to give up”, and “what God has for me is for me”. These three lessons continue to inspire me and I hope others as the main goal is to always keep your eyes on the prize while always enjoying what you’re doing. You’re never too young, too old, too early, or too late to do what you love when what you create comes from you.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
Like many Americans, the biggest obstacle my brand and I are facing is inflation. With the many changes happening around the world, the locals and the consumer always pays the bill. As I work hard to get ahead, it can become disheartening to lose focus on what I feel I was born to do to make more time for how I can make an income and continue to afford a decent standard of living. Everything today costs money, including our dreams.
