We recently connected with Sukhmanpreet Singh and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sukhmanpreet , we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I was inspired to start “The turban Tyer” business to raise awareness in our community and increase knowledge about the turban’s cultural significance. I wanted to provide a platform where people can learn about and appreciate the beauty of the Sikh culture.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Starting “The Turban Tyer” business was deeply inspired by my desire to raise awareness in our community and enhance understanding of the cultural significance of the turban, particularly within Sikh culture. The turban holds profound meaning, symbolizing values such as honor, spirituality, and identity within the Sikh community. I recognized a need to create a platform where people could not only learn about the significance of the turban but also appreciate its beauty and diversity.
Through “The Turban Tyer,” I aim to provide educational resources, workshops, and events that not only teach individuals about the history and traditions behind the turban but also encourage them to engage with and respect Sikh culture. This business is more than just about selling turbans; it’s about fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the cultural heritage they represent.
I believe that by offering a space where people can learn, interact, and celebrate Sikh culture, we can break down barriers and promote unity in our community. Additionally, “The Turban Tyer” serves as a platform for empowerment, providing opportunities for members of the Sikh community to share their traditions and stories, ultimately promoting greater inclusivity and diversity.
Additionally, I get to pursue my passion professionally by offering turban-tying services for various occasions, allowing individuals to experience the artistry and versatility of turban styles.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Turban tying is indeed an intricate art form that requires dedication, expertise, and years of practice to master. The knowledge and experience one acquires through time and effort truly make their work stand out. Beyond merely wrapping a cloth around the head, turban tying involves a profound understanding of various types of fabric and materials required for different styles.
Research and Knowledge of Turban Styles: One of the foundational skills in turban tying is thorough research and understanding of the vast array of turban styles. With over 85 styles, each carrying its unique significance and complexity, delving into the history, cultural context, and techniques behind each style is crucial. This knowledge not only enriches one’s own practice but also enables them to educate others about the diverse heritage of turban tying.
Expertise in Fabric Selection and Techniques: Mastery in turban tying extends to the selection of appropriate fabrics and materials for different styles. Understanding the characteristics of various textiles, such as their weight, texture, and draping qualities, is essential for achieving the desired look and comfort. Additionally, proficiency in tying techniques, including folds, pleats, and knots, elevates the craftsmanship of turban tying to an art form. Through years of practice and experimentation, practitioners develop a keen eye for detail and finesse in their work.
Willingness to Teach and Share Knowledge: Beyond personal expertise, the willingness to educate and share knowledge is a hallmark of esteemed turban tyers. By imparting their wisdom and skills to younger generations and enthusiasts, they contribute to the preservation and promotion of this cultural heritage. Through workshops, demonstrations, and community outreach, they foster a deeper understanding, respect, and appreciation for the artistry behind turban tying. This commitment to passing on traditions ensures that the cultural significance of turban tying continues to be recognized and celebrated worldwide.
In conclusion, the art of turban tying encompasses a combination of research, expertise, and a passion for sharing knowledge. By honing these skills and embracing the opportunity to educate others, practitioners not only make a positive impact within their communities but also contribute to the broader recognition and appreciation of the cultural significance of turban tying.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
Operating “The Turban Tyer” business in Arizona has presented its unique set of challenges, particularly due to the relatively smaller size of the Sikh community compared to other states. One of the most significant hurdles I’ve faced is reaching out to my target audience effectively.
In a state like Arizona, where the Sikh community is smaller and less concentrated, establishing connections and building awareness within the local community has proven to be a challenge. While I’ve been able to serve customers from out of state, tapping into the local Sikh community has been more difficult.
For instance, my initial customer base predominantly consisted of individuals from outside Arizona. While this was a positive start and a testament to the broader appeal of my business, it also highlighted the struggle of connecting with the local target audience within Arizona itself.
To address this challenge, I’ve been exploring various strategies to connect with the local community more effectively. This includes leveraging social media platforms, attending cultural events and gatherings.
Furthermore, I’ve been actively seeking feedback and insights from my existing customers to better understand their needs and preferences, which can inform my outreach efforts in Arizona. By adapting my approach and continuously seeking ways to engage with the local community, I’m optimistic about overcoming this challenge and establishing a stronger presence for “The Turban Tyer” within Arizona.
