We were lucky to catch up with Sun Alarcon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sun, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I feel so fortunate to have surrounded myself with so many talented and creative souls over the years. Drawing inspiration from my peers really warms my heart. I love to be in that environment that welcomes ideas, accepts differences, and allows the space for any craft. Whether I’m in the corporate field doing buying meetings, or on set for a photoshoot I tend to gravitate towards creative energy because it truly is magnetic.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a model. I represent ideas and brands in media to portray or sell a story. What I believe is special in my work or what I convey is authenticity. Truth is, I’m not exactly the super skinny, cover of Vogue, jetting off to Paris Fashion Week model. Being transgender, I am always cautious about wearing certain garments. I am also 6’ tall and going through a hormone replacement therapy. Various side effects like bloating and body fluctuations are all factors of this journey. I represent a very real portrait for a lot of trans people and I’m proud of that. With every little minute change my body is going through, I embrace it because it makes me feel good and I hope to only be a vehicle to show the world we exist.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think in any field you find passion in you could apply these ideas. First off I would definitely always emphasize to newcomers, students, and even senior level experienced individuals is that “the worst they can say is ‘no’.” Never be afraid to ask for raises, to inquire about that open position, or just apply your feedback. Rejection is nothing but a “no” so, why fear it? If that’s the worst response then it’s all up from there. Never be afraid to communicate your wants and needs and remind others that ought to be valued.
Secondly, going off that same point, is understanding the power in “no.” Know your limits, emphasize your worth, and don’t be afraid to push back. Yes, it’s okay to say “no” as well. Communication in any work field is key and we are all human with very real feelings and emotions. Sometimes these limits get tested or you may not identify with certain ideals or strategies. It’s vital to express them in the best way possible to create a more honest and authentic environment. Let people understand your ideas and be open minded to feedback.
Lastly, I would say making connections is always key to a positive work life future. You just never know where certain relationships may lead you to. I hate to say the word “networking” because it makes it sound so robotic. But honestly the most valuable relationships always come from your authenticity. Real will always recognize real.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes! I’m always open to collaborations whether it be with brands, small businesses, fellow creatives like stylists, artists, directors, photographers, videographers, and agents. I am based around both the LA and OC areas so I try to make myself flexible. If anyone is open to connecting with me please feel free to message me through my Instagram.
