Meet Suoye Dominic

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Suoye Dominic a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Suoye, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

Imposter syndrome can lead to mental break down,i over come it by having self confidence and surrounding myself with a supportive network of fellow artists. We share our experiences, celebrate each other’s successes, and also when I look back at the process of how I got to where I am today. It keeps me grounded and motivated.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

My name is Suoye Babatunde Dominic , born in Lagos Nigeria, attended Yaba college of technology where I studied painting (fine art) , I am a Nigerian visual Artist who’s work explores the profound impact of memory, identity and human experience on Africa culture .
Within my work, swirling forms represent the constant interplay of past and present experiences that shape who we are. Particularly, I focus on hidden or misrepresented aspects of this culture, such as the societal dynamics that create a false perception of success based solely on appearance. My paintings challenge this notion by depicting figures adorned in fine attire, entangled in swirling forms, symbolizing the internal struggles and complexities that lie beneath the surface.
I incorporate nimbuses around the figures, imbuing them with a mystical touch that symbolizes deeper meanings and a divine presence, strengthening the religious impact within my work.
Through a diverse approach that utilizes color to evoke emotions, I invite viewers to engage in self- discovery. My acrylic paintings on canvas feature unconventional portrayals of the human head, characterized by intriguing spiral formations, aiming to challenge perceptions. Ultimately, I create an experimental space for viewers to co-create meaning, sparking new cycles of reflection and challenging assumptions.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

On my artistic journey, I prioritize discipline, creativity, and courage. These three qualities are essential for me to grow and develop as an artist, and for those starting their journey, they should take consistent practice seriously, patience and and willingness to learn.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

The most impactful thing my parent did for me was supporting my dream of becoming an artist, growing up with a single father and also being his only son,he wanted me to be an engineer just like him.I remember he always scolded me for drawing too much on paper, I could literally finish a new pen on drawings. My dad was actually a creative person too, his drawings are soo good, and he could make a mini bicycle with wires , I have always admired his creativity, and looked forward to being a creative one day. When I got admission and said I wanted to study painting. He spread his arms wide accepting my decision of studying fine art.
