Meet Super OK

We were lucky to catch up with Super OK recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Super , so happy to have you on the platform with us today and excited to chat about your lessons and insights. Our ability to make good decisions can massively impact our lives, careers and relationships and so it would be very helpful to hear about how you built your decision-making skills.

Super OK is a four-piece band, and we don’t exactly have one frontperson, so we make decisions pretty democratically, actually. Collaboration in any form requires that each person involved knows what they want but it also requires knowing how much you want what you want versus how open-minded you want to be. We’ve had frank discussions where opinions are strong and resolute, and we’ve had plenty of conversations where we’ve let each person’s input shape an idea that couldn’t have come from just one of us alone. For any sort of pursuit that is best served with one “lead,” one person may opt to head that and have the final say. For example, we don’t have just one songwriter, so when we work on a new song, that song’s writer is effectively the “song leader” and gets to make the call on creative decisions, ultimately.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Super OK is a rock band out of Los Angeles, often spoken of as having a tinge of late 90s / early 00s alternative flavor. We formed in 2018 and, like everyone else on Earth, put plans on hold in 2020. During that time, we recorded our first LP, which we released early in 2022. Since then, we’ve been playing shows around LA on reputable stages like Molly Malone’s, Harvelle’s, The Whisky a Go Go, The Viper Room, The Mint, and more. We also released our first music video in late 2023 for our song “Push.”

Summer 2024 is the summer of Super OK singles! We just released “Annoyed the Void” at the end of June, and will be releasing three more songs in July and August: “Changes,” “Seeing Illusions,” and “All Along.”

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Humility, curiosity, and confidence. To work together on a creative and, at times, business-like collaboration with your friends, you need to strike a balance of being inquisitive and being assured in your instincts. Sometimes you need to seek council of your bandmates, and sometimes you have to follow your gut. How much you do each is often a shifting ratio, depending on your mutual and individual hopes, goals, and circumstances.

If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?

The biggest challenge for us, and we’d imagine most creatives, is just finding the time to create and the finances to support that. We want to release music regularly, and we all have full time jobs that support our lifestyle, but recording is expensive.
