Meet Suzane Bacelar

We were lucky to catch up with Suzane Bacelar recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Suzane, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

I love this question! My resilience comes from knowing that in life, you either find success or make excuses. I believe that problems are just a normal part of the journey. When you expect them, you can handle them better.

As an immigrant woman, I could easily use my background as an excuse in a still male-dominated industry. But instead, it drives me to be more determined and it gives me a sense of pride. I see challenges as opportunities to grow and improve. This mindset helps me stay strong and keep moving forward, no matter my obstacles.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

With my camera in hand, I’m an artist who captures the special relationships among family members. Whether it’s a milestone event or an ordinary Sunday afternoon, I transform everyday moments into beautiful, extraordinary memories filled with motion and sound. My films allow parents and children to travel through time, revisiting their past while preserving it for the future. I love creating nostalgic pieces that transport people back to the way they felt in a certain moment and remind them, especially children, of how deeply they are loved.

I discovered my passion for video because it’s the perfect medium for telling meaningful family stories—births, grandparents’ legacies, motherhood journeys, or simple afternoons spent together. It allows me to capture interactions that might otherwise be forgotten. Since then, I’ve created some of the most touching images and films, working with wonderful families on emotional love journeys that bring profound meaning to life.

Imagine being able to bring your memories back to life… Our family memories deserve to be preserved with sound and movement for us and for your children, as we will be gifting them a way to see not only a day of their childhood but also our love for them! That’s my superpower!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1. Creativity: Being creative is one of the most important qualities for a videographer and photographer. Creativity allows you to capture and edit moments in a way that tells the story, showing the emotions and the relationships. It’s not just about taking a picture or filming a scene; it’s about seeing things from different angles and using light, colors, and composition to make the images come alive in an artistic way.

2. Technical Skills: Knowing how to use your equipment is essential. This includes understanding your camera, lighting, and editing software. Good technical skills ensure that you can handle different shooting conditions and still produce high-quality photos and videos. The work is so far from just pressing a button! Editing is also a big part of the job and what requires most of your time.

3. Communication: Great communication skills are crucial. You need to be able to connect with people, make them feel comfortable, and guide them during the whole process. Good communication helps you understand what the family values the most, and what to capture from their personalities and relationships in your work. It involves truly listening, reading between the lines, and being able to explain your ideas clearly. One of my clients said “It felt like Suzane has known them forever” – that’s what makes the experience easy for them and helps create authentic and heartfelt photos and videos.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

Birth and Family Videography is a fairly new concept, which is a challenge by itself and, at the same time what set me apart from other professional photographers. Not many families know this is even a thing available to them.

I wish I had my daughter’s birth documented in the video. Back then, I had pictures to remember her cute face, but I didn’t have a video of her first cry. Or how my husband’s face lit up when he saw her for the first time. Or even my first words to her. And those little moments keep fading away in my mind as time passes!

But imagine having these incredible moments on video, where you can relive them over and over again. It’s a game-changer for families! And I want to provide that to parents who truly prioritize remembering all the nuances of their family life.
