We were lucky to catch up with Suzette Nicole Burton recently and have shared our conversation below.
Suzette Nicole, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I developed my confidence and self-esteem through various experiences, particularly during and after college. The pivotal shift occurred when I was thrust into roles that required skills I had limited knowledge of. While attending Pratt Institute, I found an avenue for self-expression through personal experimental films and videos, which served as a therapeutic outlet.
Despite being initially timid about public speaking, my role as an outreach coordinator during the co-production of the documentary “Daddy Don’t Go” compelled me to facilitate screenings and panel discussions. This exposure forced me into public speaking, ultimately contributing to a significant boost in my confidence. Subsequently, I’ve engaged in numerous public speaking events, discussing my filmmaking career and presenting works-in-progress screenings at educational institutions, conferences, film festivals, government organizations, and on radio/podcasts.
This newfound skill has not only enhanced my confidence in public speaking but has also translated into increased confidence in creating content for social media. In addition to being a filmmaker, I am a social media content creator and influencer specializing in travel, lifestyle, and food. The enhanced self-esteem has allowed me to showcase beautiful locations worldwide and collaborate with various brands in promoting their products.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a filmmaker and social media content creator, having delved into the world of influencer marketing in recent years. My professional journey spans various roles in the film industry, from producing to camera operation and editing, with a focus on documentaries, television shows, and narrative projects. Notable works include “Daddy Don’t Go,” “Unladylike2020,” “Killing County,” “Interaction Cowboy,” and “Whitney Houston In Focus,” collaborating with renowned entities like ABC News/Hulu, Pureland Pictures, Blumhouse, Disarming Films, and WEtv/A.M.C. Networks.
In 2018, I founded Concrete Dreams Productions L.L.C., motivated by my directorial debut on the documentary “Tribal Strands.” This film follows two self-made hair artists advocating against hair discrimination. Currently, “Tribal Strands,” a six-year endeavor, is slated for completion by the end of 2025. The film is funded by Voqal and supported by various organizations, including Brown Girls Doc Mafia, BAVC, Working Films, Cucalorus, and Women Make Movies. We’re actively fundraising, engaging outreach partners, and conducting works-in-progress screenings.
Our outreach partners include Drexel University, The Urban Design League, and Safo Hair, while our film has been screened in cities like New York City, Miami, Philadelphia, and London. We’ve also launched a merch line on Etsy and Beaded by Delilah. The aim is to strengthen relationships, promote the film, and secure necessary funding for its completion. I’m enthusiastic about venturing into directing and producing more projects. I have several more in development such as “Disconnected” and Beyond The Blue Night Sky.”
Simultaneously, I’ve expanded my role into social media content creation and influencing. Starting in 2018 with “The Ultimate Vegan Brunch Tour” web series, featuring vegan restaurants worldwide, I’ve grown into creating travel content on Instagram and TikTok (Happylifesuz). I’m exploring collaborations with hotels, airbnb’s, and brands, leveraging my travel experiences. Recently, prompted by inquiries, I’ve ventured into travel services, offering personalized guides powered by Thatch Travel. Future goals include planning group trips, collaborating with influencers, and exploring a part-time role as a travel agent.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey, three qualities that played a crucial role were developing patience, networking, and building the confidence to take risks. For those who are early in their journeys, my advice would be to recognize that success takes time, and patience is essential. It’s easy to get discouraged when things don’t happen as quickly as desired, but every small achievement is a step forward.
Networking is equally important. Beyond attending events, actively join groups, participate in conferences, and share your work in casual conversations. Building a diverse network can open unexpected doors and provide valuable support.
Lastly, building the confidence to take risks is vital. Many are afraid of rejection, and I was too. However, taking calculated risks is often necessary for significant progress. Embrace the possibility of hearing “no” as part of the journey and remember that growth often happens outside your comfort zone. In summary, patience, networking, and confidence in taking risks are key elements for a successful journey.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
