We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Suzy Sapir. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Suzy below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Suzy with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My dad had an excellent work ethic and was a multi-skilled small business owner, newspaper publisher and teacher, As a teenager, I worked for him and watched how he put food on our table and made a living for his family. Not many kids get to directly observe that side of a parent’s life. He was fearless, never afraid to learn a new skill or trade, passionate about his business and he loved the flexibility self-employment provided him as a husband and father to four kids. If my mom called and had a grocery list he could just leave and grab it all without reporting to anyone. I was in awe that people could make a living on their own terms. He could make as much as he wanted or as little. He could work a full day or take a day off. This is what ultimately led me to have an entrepreneurial spirit early on. I enjoyed the freedom and flexibility it provided and my dad seemed very fulfilled as a person and small business owner.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I own Hippy Pilgrim and manufacture a line of handmade, clean ingredient spices and seasonings that provide restaurant quality results with zero effort.
The best part about the job is the art of spice mixology. I love creating new spice blends based on flavor profile, trends and intuition. When a new product is successful it is a very rewarding feeling to know you resonated with a large group of people. It’s honestly an h0nor to have a home in so many US kitchens.
An online order never leaves here without a handwritten thank you note from me or my staff. I’ve been practicing this since day one in business and continue it now almost thirteen years later. My customers allow me to do what I love and I never take that for granted. Not to mention they work hard for their money, have so many spice options to choose online ir at the store yet they chose Hippy Pilgrim. That to me is deserving of the extra step to handwrite a thank you.
Our Products Include: 16 varieties of fresh handmade garlic salts, 7 varieties of handmade vanilla bean sugars, vanilla extract, two savory rubs, dipping oil seasonings and a complete line of salt free seasonings and marinade starters. Due to the popularity of our salt free line, we will be adding three new varieties in 2025.
Every Wednesday night 7-8pm EST I cook live on Facebook and TikTok.
I operate a FREE kitchen helpline 7 days a week 7-9PM EST where anyone can call 781-291-0264 with any kitchen or cooking related question and can have it answered live in the moment. It’s called the Hippy Pilgrim Helpline.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Trust your intuition when making business decisions. It’s your most powerful guide. If something doesn’t feel right I won’t do it or if a new product isn’t jiving with me I won’t sell it until I perfect the blend and feel good about it. My parents hated my business name but it felt right to me. I went with it and people love the name. They do too now.
Believe in your product. You must be passionate about it to be able to authentically sell it to others.
My education and television background plays a huge role in my business especially going live cooking with my products weekly. My degree is in English Communications with a concentration in television and radio. I feel very comfortable on camera representing my brand and chatting it up with my customers.
Starting out it’s always easy to listen to others but do what feels right to you always. Even if your ideas aren’t popular. Listen to your gut. People thought I was crazy to do a helpline and it has been incredibly rewarding helping people this way. Never stop believing in your abilities or your products. Learn to speak to your customers on camera in a way that feels comfortable for you. It doesn’t have to be perfect just exude passion.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I love collaborating with chefs, foodies, influencers, restaurants and food/cooking brands.
I am always seeking small- and large-scale sponsors for our cooking lives and our free helpline. There is a tab on our website for this at hippypilgrim.com
