Meet Svetlana Tulasi

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Svetlana Tulasi. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Svetlana, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
Having a strong vision for my future and having faith that no matter how long it takes it will turn out just the way I hoped (or even better) – that is my ultimate life motto that helps me through moments of self-doubt and unfounded criticism.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m the founder, choreographer and lead dancer of Svetlana Tulasi Dance Company LLC, a Los Angeles-based company specializing in Indian Dance – Kathak, Bollywood, Tollywood, Bhangra, Garba. I am one of the pioneers of Kathak Fusion – a blend of traditional Indian Classical dance style called Kathak and mainstream pop music. We perform live dance shows at private events (weddings, corporate shows, etc) as well as international dance festivals. I also teach dance workshops worldwide, choreograph, dance and cast for music videos and for other dance companies. We do flash mobs, interactive sets with the crowd, perform on live television and pretty much all things dance.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Rigorous dance training – from the foundations and up, and continuous learning 2. Communication / negotiating skills – to market your work and maintain relationships with clients
3. Reinvesting into your business – whether that means having extra staff or new outfits/props/social media manager etc.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
Taking the step to launch my company officially has helped tremendously with building brand recognition and overall business growth.
