Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sweety Taur. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sweety, we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?
My generosity stems from a deeply ingrained philosophy I’ve developed over more than a decade as a creator working across both tangible and intangible mediums. I find peace in the process of evolving ideas and embracing iterations rather than chasing conclusions. Once I recognized this, my relationship with my work transformed—I began to see my role not as a keeper of creations but as a facilitator of flow.
I let my ideas interact with their contexts, interpret the outcomes, and evolve further. This approach naturally fostered a practice of generosity, where I share freely, knowing that every interaction adds to the infinite possibilities around me. For me, sharing is not just an act but a cycle of giving and receiving inspiration, a rhythm that fuels my creativity and keeps the process alive.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a creator who navigates the intersections of objects, experiences, images, writings, and spaces. My work delves into social histories, domesticity in liberalized India, crafts, speculative design, earth building, and ethical, plural, body-conscious design. Over the years, I’ve embraced multiple roles: designing for studios and industries, collaborating with craft clusters, training artisans and professionals, conducting academic research, and creating & curating public exhibitions on socially and ecologically relevant topics.
What excites me most about my work is its expansive nature—from hands-on creation to theoretical exploration—and its potential to foster meaningful impact. I focus on crafting responsible narratives and artifacts that embody materiality, cultural relevance, and functional beauty. My research, including the award-winning paper Inclusive Design Ecosystems: Reading ‘Life-Worlds’ through Speculative Fiction, delves into how design can frame everyday life’s relational and ontological dimensions.
I’m creating an exciting new venture called Prolog Collective, an experiential learning platform to introduce design and cultural literacy to children in India. This initiative includes educational retreats, hands-on workshops, and a quarterly magazine. In today’s screen-dominated era, we aim to offer a curated, ethical, and immersive learning alternative to nurture young minds with diverse perspectives.
By focusing on problem-solving, critical thinking, and multidisciplinary approaches, this platform seeks to nurture thoughtful, curious, and creative individuals who can engage meaningfully and inclusively with the world around them. It’s a mission rooted in my belief that design and culture are fundamental to everyday life and essential for shaping a better future. We emphasize individual interpretation and tailored learning experiences to encourage autonomy and passion-driven education.
With this initiative, I aim to create an enduring impact, fostering a love for learning that blends creativity, heritage, and modernity. I’m thrilled to contribute to shaping a generation of thinkers and makers who approach the world with curiosity and responsibility.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, three key qualities that have shaped my journey are openness in learning and practice patterns, accountability, and the ability to derive pleasure from deep working.
The first, openness or horizontality in learning and practice, has been instrumental. Growing up and even today, I never set boundaries on what I should or shouldn’t learn, nor do I tie my learning to specific job roles or outcomes. Curiosity has been my compass, leading me to unexpected and rewarding places. This habit of embracing diverse subjects without restraint created a vast inventory of analogies, ideas, and inspirations. This breadth of knowledge has been invaluable as a designer, researcher, and educator. It ensured I never ran out of ideas or hit dead ends because I constantly connected seemingly unrelated topics. Early in my career, I rarely said no to work opportunities, immersing myself in various experiences and roles as a creator. This approach helped contextualize the design theories I learned in school and adapt them to real-world applications. By saying yes to various challenges, I rapidly expanded my understanding of design practice and its place in the larger scheme of things. This fearlessness also made me highly adaptable—seeds of curiosity planted across disciplines opened up multiple career paths. If a role didn’t align with my passion, I always had the flexibility to pivot and pursue something that resonated with me.
The second quality, accountability, is another foundational factor shaping my journey. In an unpredictable world, being accountable provides comfort and dependability to those around me. I never approach tasks half-heartedly. If I commit to something, I ensure it’s completed to the best of my ability. This principle not only guides me in choosing what to say yes to but also safeguards the quality of my work. It has allowed me to build a reputation for dependability, reducing chaos for colleagues and clients. In a world full of uncertainties, this kind of reliability is invaluable. Working with dependable people has enriched my experiences, allowing for a focus on the constructive aspects of work rather than unnecessary distractions. Accountability, to me, is about creating a space of trust where everyone can perform their best without undue stress or doubt.
Finally, deriving pleasure from deep working has been transformative. Doing things thoroughly and with complete dedication gives me immense satisfaction and peace. This kind of work provides a sense of fulfillment that’s deeply motivating, akin to a spiritual experience. It brings clarity about what I deserve and what I don’t, as I firmly believe I’ve only ever received what I’ve worked for—no more, no less. This perspective keeps me grounded and drives me to work harder for what I aspire to achieve. When work becomes a source of joy, pursuing dreams transforms into a series of deeply fulfilling moments. This quality has made my life richer and allowed me to be fully present in my journey.
My advice for those early in their journey is to cultivate curiosity and embrace openness in learning without fear of failure or rigid expectations. Build a habit of accountability to earn trust and make your work environments harmonious. Finally, find joy in deep, meaningful work—it will motivate you and make pursuing your goals an enriching experience.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents have done for me is fostering a strong sense of independence and accountability while instilling the belief in working towards my goals. Growing up, they gave me the freedom to manage my time, choose my interests, and make decisions about hobbies, holidays, and courses. Alongside this freedom, they emphasized the importance of taking full responsibility for those choices, which taught me to think critically and own my decisions.
They also built trust in the value of hard work by sharing their own stories of perseverance and upward mobility. These stories, combined with their subtle yet consistent reminders to apply these values, helped me internalize the importance of effort and process.
This nurturing has had a profound impact on me as an adult. It has given me the confidence to pursue my goals while understanding the effort required to achieve them. Failure doesn’t surprise me because I always have a clear sense of the work I’ve put in and the results I honestly deserve. This realistic perspective enables me to set practical goals and approach them strategically.
Moreover, the independence I developed early on means I can navigate my interests and work with confidence. I rely on my own competencies and needs rather than giving in to unrealistic expectations or external pressures. This foundation has been instrumental in shaping how I approach challenges and opportunities in life.
