We caught up with the brilliant and insightful SYBIL HILL CARTER a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi SYBIL, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
As a professional artist, I have prioritized self-care, even as I’ve grown older. Through daily walks in nature and regular yoga practice, I have found a source of inspiration and creativity. I have embraced a self-care routine that includes restorative baths with Epsom salts and essential oils. My belief in the power of self-care, including diet, yoga, and naps, has been a driving force in my creative journey. Starting my day with tea and heading to my home studio, where I’ve worked long before COVID-19, sets the tone for a fulfilling and productive day.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
This summer in 2024, I will place a full-page ad in Aspen Sojourner Magazine to showcase my newest “embroidery” collection. I have spent the past six months creating 12 new works to be exhibited at Gallery 101 in Basalt, Colorado. This will allow past and current clients to see my latest creations.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
From as early as I can remember, I would imagine myself as a painter, an artist. I was lucky enough to have a very talented father who had been instrumental in guiding me and teaching me about art and business. I can paint well, but I also learned the importance of exposure to allow my work to be seen and sold. I started scouting out galleries early in my career, and my work sold very well, which continued to light a fire in me to go for more.
After investing my successful earnings in the art world, I found a beautiful gallery location I now share with my twin sister. We have been exhibiting our work for the past four summer seasons, and it is a dream come true.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The book “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill was my guiding light, always by my bedside. It helped me understand that our thoughts have incredible power; this book shows us how to turn our dreams into reality, as I did as a painter. When I became a single mom, I took control of my thoughts and prayers to manifest my dreams of being a painter and being home as a mother. It allowed me to be with my daughter and led to quick and significant success, providing more freedom and financial growth than I ever imagined.
