We recently connected with Sydney Jones and have shared our conversation below.
Sydney, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
I believe my self-discipline has largely been shaped by my environment and the examples I’ve had around me throughout my life. I’ve been fortunate to grow up seeing a strong work ethic and consistency modeled by my family, particularly my grandmother, my parents, and my sister, who has an incredible level of self-discipline when it comes to her work. Being exposed to that from an early age made discipline feel less like a forced habit and more like a learned standard, and over time, it naturally rubbed off on me.
I also think self-discipline is deeply tied to mindset. It’s something that evolves as your mentality evolves. Each year, I choose a single word to guide me and something I want to be able to look back on in December and say truly defined how I showed up that year. For 2026, that word is discipline. While I already practice a strong level of discipline in my work, I’m intentionally focused on expanding that into other areas of my life, including my personal routines and physical health.
At the core of it, I believe discipline grows from what you surround yourself with: what you consume, what you listen to, what you read, and the standards you allow into your daily life. All of that shapes your mentality. Mine hasn’t always been as laser-focused on self-discipline as it is now, but once that shift happens, and it’s supported by the right influences and habits, it becomes something you can continually strengthen and build upon over time.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hi, my name is Sydney Jones, and I’m the owner and founder of Sydney Jones VA, a digital marketing agency focused on helping scaling businesses grow intentionally and sustainably through strategic marketing. At our core, we partner with brands that have big ideas and help bring clarity, structure, and momentum to their marketing efforts.
My team and I offer social media marketing, website design, email marketing and copywriting, social media advertising, and personalized strategy calls with me one-on-one. For clients who aren’t looking for a long-term commitment, we also provide flexible, project-based options, such as (but not limited to) platform audits, content or strategy intensives, and targeted consulting sessions, so business owners can get meaningful support without feeling locked into a one-size-fits-all model.
That flexibility is incredibly important to us. No two businesses are the same, and because of that, no two client partnerships should look the same either. We don’t believe in cookie-cutter packages. Every strategy, offer, and collaboration is tailored specifically to the client’s goals, audience, and stage of growth.
What excites me most about this work is getting to sit with someone, hear their ideas, and help bring their vision to life. There’s nothing more rewarding than watching a client’s hard work gain traction and seeing the results that come from a thoughtful, collaborative approach. Being part of that growth journey and seeing the impact of what we build together is truly the best part of what I do.
As we step into a new year, my focus is on continuing to grow our long-term client partnerships while also expanding the strategy and project-based side of the business. That includes more one-on-one strategy work, audits, and accessible offerings designed to support business owners at different stages of their journey. If anything here resonates, I’d love to connect! Readers are always welcome to reach out using the contact information provided in this article.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, I truly believe the three most impactful skills on my journey have been rooted in soft skills, which often don’t get talked about enough. While technical knowledge is important, it’s the mindset and how you show up that ultimately shape long-term success.
The first is dedication and openness to learning. Being willing to try new things, stay curious, and remain open to different approaches has been critical for me. Not everything works the first time, and that’s okay. Growth comes from experimenting, observing what works best for you, and being open to learning from people who have already walked a similar path, especially when where they are now aligns with where you want to be in the future.
The second is the ability to receive and apply feedback. Learning how to take constructive criticism without viewing it as a personal attack has been a game-changer. Instead of reacting defensively, I’ve learned to pause and ask, Why is this being shared with me? And how can I improve? That shift in perspective has allowed me to refine my offers, strengthen my services, and ultimately serve my clients at a higher level.
The third is effective listening, which is harder than it sounds, especially as a business owner juggling multiple clients, projects, and ideas at once. Being present in conversations while still capturing important details takes intention. Tools like call note-takers and handwritten notes have helped me stay engaged without missing key information. It’s important not to be buried in a notepad, but to genuinely listen, connect, and then have systems in place to support follow-through.
While soft skills have played a huge role in my growth, hard skills matter too. I studied marketing in college, and that foundation was valuable. However, I’m a very hands-on, visual learner, and I’ve gained the majority of my practical expertise through real-world experience with trial and error, testing strategies, and learning directly from doing the work. That hands-on learning has been far more impactful in my day-to-day business than theory alone.
My advice for those earlier in their journey is to prioritize mindset just as much as skill-building. Say yes to opportunities, stay open-minded, seek feedback, and don’t be afraid to try, even when you’re unsure. Often, it’s the soft skills that create the space for hard skills to develop. When you commit to learning, listening, and growing, everything else tends to follow.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Absolutely! I’m always open to meeting new, like-minded people and exploring meaningful collaborations. Sometimes that looks like a formal collaboration, and other times it’s simply connecting, exchanging insights, and seeing where things naturally lead.
On the client side, I’m always excited to connect with business owners who are ready to take their marketing to the next level and no longer want to do everything themselves. If that resonates, I’d love to set up a discovery call to explore whether we’re a good fit and how we might work together!
From a partnership perspective, I’m especially interested in collaborating with fellow entrepreneurs in the marketing, digital media, and creative space, as well as strong, community-minded women who are building something they truly believe in. I’m also passionate about supporting and connecting with young entrepreneurs, early-stage founders who are ambitious, curious, and eager to grow, because I don’t think those conversations and opportunities get enough visibility.
I’m very open when it comes to the format of collaboration. Whether it’s co-hosting speaking opportunities, participating in panels, podcast conversations, audience cross-promotion, or something entirely different, I’m always willing to listen. If you have an idea, even if it doesn’t fit neatly into a box, I’m all ears. Open-mindedness is something I value deeply, and I believe some of the best partnerships come from unexpected ideas.
