Meet Sydni Cook

We recently connected with Sydni Cook and have shared our conversation below.

Sydni , thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
If you have a dream, something you want to do more than anything in the world, something you love so much you’re completely unsure of who you would be without it, you have no other choice than to give that passion every chance it can have to be your life. I have always wanted to do music and I figure if I continue trying every single day, being consistent in practicing the guitar, the piano, producing, writing, and singing – if I stay consistent in promoting myself on social media, performing live, walking up to people and pitching myself, that’s what I have to do. So I make sure every day I’m doing everything in my power to get to my goal, which would be financial freedom from music, having a platform to influence the world in a positive way, giving music to people that need to be heard, and touring the world playing shows. I do it because it feels right, when I’m not working towards my goals around music my life feels like it’s in a mess of shambles. I trust my heart and the purpose I believe God put in it – whether it gets me there or not I know this is the path I’m designed to take. I think all of us have passions in our hearts we have to listen to and follow. And the farther I get down this road the more meaningful it is to continue on it. I’ve missed out on trips, nights out, parties, relationships, and many more things in order to make time for my steps towards my career, and I’m so happy I did. Discipline is everything to me. I am committed to my dreams and I think we all should be.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am an Atlanta-based artist, vocally I have a background in soul I’ve been inspired by so many like SZA, Amy Winehouse, Etta James, Sam Cooke, Ella Fitzgerald. My writing style is in the realm of alternative, pop, and rnb. I make music I enjoy playing, I make music that is raw and real – you’ll never hear me say something I don’t mean – I may change my mind in the future – but if I sang it, if I wrote it, believe me, I meant it. My goal is to be as authentic as possible and the people who relate will hear my stuff and have that amazing feeling of being heard. That’s my favorite thing, when you find a song or an artist that when you listen to their stuff you feel seen and validated – especially when you’re young and that happens for the first time it’s such a life-changing experience when that specific validation comes from a piece of art (song). I also produce, play guitar, and piano – I took these things up to be able to write music that sounded how I wanted it to sound. I’ve been writing music for a really long time – I retaught myself piano when I was in 7th grade to be able to write songs, then when I was 16 or 17 I learned guitar cuz I was doing gigs and realized a piano is really hard to haul around its not convinient and the guitar allowed me to explore a new sound and space to write my songs to. For a long time from when I was 17 till I was about 19 I was trying to learn how to produce but it was harder to juggle with every else I was doing so it wasn’t really clicking for me, but when I was 20 I really started to understand it and now I can confidently I know how to produce – I produced my song Knife In My Purse which is out! But I learned all these things in an effort to solidify my sound and create songs I loved from top to bottom, not just songs I enjoyed some parts. There’s nothing more frusterating than having a vision for a creation and it cant be realized cuz you dont have the skill to create it and the people around you who do have those skills aren’t really understanding your vision. In this industry it’s so important to be self sufficient and not just wait for someone to come along and be able to help you – you can complain all you want but if you’re not trying to fix those things you’re complaining about just go ahead and give up.

I do have a new single coming out on September 13th!! its called – trick daddy ! I’m so excited for this song to come out. It’s a really fun anthem-y song with an insane beat switch in the outro. I also filmed the music video at lenox mall and got kicked out twice lol – I just cant wait for everyone to hear it!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My biggest advice I’d give to anyone trying to get into any industry would be get an internship! Interning at Icon Studios when I was 18-19 is the best thing I have EVER done for my career. Almost everything I have now when it comes to my career is because of that internship. Through connections I made, things I’ve learned, actually seeing the industry from the inside – I even decided to go to Georgia State and learn about business instead of going to NYU and learning about music – that was a huge decision for my life and career and I am so so grateful for the one I made. go panthers and go no student debt shoutout the hope scholarship.

3 important qualities I’ve needed and luckily had on this journey – resilience, listening/respecting others, trusting the process.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My parents are everything to me – and my brother is as well. All of them have always supported me without any doubts, without any pressure. They believe in me, they trust me, and they support me. That’s not common when it comes to artists, parents can be unsupportive or try to get you to do something else, and not trust your vision. My parents want this for me as much as I want it for me and they will and have supported me in anyway I need. I’ve had shows where no one showed up but my parents, I’ve had shows where my littler brother brought 15 friends to come support me. My parents have gone off on family members for not supporting my music – they care so much and it means the world me ! Everything they do is the most impactful thing cuz they support me and listen to me and give me advise about this music stuff every single day.
