Meet T.W. Pilar

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful T.W. Pilar a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

T.W., thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?

This is a hard topic, because I beleive that optimism comes in different forms; to be optimistic is to truly take the good with the bad, It’s a matter of faith, whatever that word means to someone, and understanding that everything has an ebb and flow. Didn’t get that job? Good. Lost a friend? Better off. Changed directions suddenly? Congratulations. Feel uncomfortable? Be proud. For me, life is about experience. My optimism is simply the realization that I have no control over anything but myself, and that navigation is what makes life interesting and worth experiencing; which I’m grateful for every second I can be.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Pitch this. Introduce yourself, Brand that. Im a designer, a creative, I have ideas- I try to execute them, and value introspection, autodidacticism, and the environment. I have a website if you’re curious. You can call me Pilar.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Find what is important to you in life, and learn about it. To the best of your ability, talk, teach, and demonstrate those values to others. Fall in love with the idea of becoming the best version of yourself, and encourage others to fall in love with themselves as well. Take care of yourself, and inspire others to do the same. All the sad, horrible, violent things in the world will be easier to fight, change, and reconstruct when you are taking initiatives to fight, change and reconstruct parts of yourself. Prioritize yourself, and use your strength to be there in the ways the world needs you.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

The Aesthetic Theory, by Theodore Adorno. Yes, it’s a textbook. But it perfectly dictates how society has come to perceive value and beauty, their relation to capital gain and marketing, and how systemic classism, racism, and colonialism has all been implemented to weaponize our self esteem against ourselves… which is heavy, but worth the read.
