Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Taiwo Aloba. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Taiwo, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
Growing up in Lagos, Nigeria, is a good grounding for writing for the stage. Living in New York also gives you the abundant optimism you need to make theater-making a vocation. My optimism stems from the limitless possibilities for creativity, the ability to connect with diverse audiences, and the transformative power of storytelling in bringing about meaningful change.
Inspiration to create is innate. Art chose me—I have been creating art for as long as I can remember. Reflecting on my journey and the countless possibilities ahead fills me with optimism. My projects make me optimistic and hopeful. It is joyful to conceive the plays and watch them come to life. Working with amazing creatives and the affirming and positive reactions from the audiences keep me optimistic.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am an independent theater maker. As a creative visionary, I conceive, develop, and bring theatrical productions to life. I am a multifaceted artist who takes on roles such as playwright, director, producer, and sometimes performer. I navigate the entire creative process, from crafting compelling scripts to orchestrating performances.
Being an independent theater maker is an exhilarating journey marked by the freedom to explore unconventional narratives and push artistic boundaries. The excitement lies in the autonomy to bring unique visions to life, creating immersive experiences that challenge, inspire, and resonate with audiences. The special aspect is the intimate connection forged with the creative process, allowing for a deeply personal and authentic expression of storytelling. As an independent theater maker, I find joy in weaving narratives that provoke thought, evoke emotions, and leave a lasting impact on myself and those who engage with my work.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most impactful qualities that have been most impactful in my journey as an independent theatermaker are creativity, adaptability, and perseverance. As an independent theatermaker, you quickly become an expert in resilience and pathological optimism. For those early in their journey, I advise immersing yourself in diverse artistic experiences. Keep creating; you have got this.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Absolutely, I’m actively seeking collaborators passionate about theater production, publishing, and company growth. I welcome producers and individuals with a shared commitment to innovative storytelling. If you’re interested in collaborating, reach out through my website or social media platforms. Let’s bring captivating stories to the stage together.
