We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Takeesha Young a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Takeesha, thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
My generosity comes from my grandfather. He is a man that always has and always liked to help others. He has a heart of gold and he had taught me to be as humble as I am today.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a self taught baker who found the passion for baking after I had my daughter. I’ve always had a niche for art and creativity rather it was through crafts or drawing all I knew is I loved being creative! Growing up I never took it seriously it was just something I did for fun from time to time. But as I became a mom I had to start planning birthday parties and family gatherings this more so after my twins and not having the enough money to pay someone to do these things for me, I said why not do something with my creativity and somewhat artistic abilities and learn to bake and create cupcakes on my own. I already knew how to cook and do arts and crafts so why not. With inspiration and determination I got to baking. After failed numerous attempts I wanted to give up more than I can count but I had to keep in mind and look at how many times I’ve succeeded. With my kids being my sole reason why I never gave up and also the support from friends and family especially my mother who let me use and abuse her kitchen on many occasions, this really pushed me to become a better baker over the years. Without them I probably would have given up long time ago. Thank you!
KupKakes and more was established in 2020 not long after the pandemic. After working almost 8years as a Healthcare IT Consultant and with the changes and impact the Covid 19 Pandemic had on the world I realized nothing is promised and why not start that business girl! So I did! KupKakes and more is not only gives you cupcakes with a twist with fun and creativity but it also gives you much more! Example pies, cakes, cookies, puddings etc. I even offer vegan options! The possibilities are endless if it can be created I will try it! KupKakes and more is sole operated and based out in the Charlotte area currently only serving locally. Shipping is in the works and we can’t wait to be able to ship nationwide.
KupKakes and more recently published a kids affirmation coloring book with the help of my kids it’s called “It’s A KupKake Thing: Kids Affirmation Coloring Book” Available now in paperback on Amazon at https://a.co/d/dFfOYEM and also I just released “KupKakes and more Recipe Journal” designed for existing and future chefs and bakers to write down those amazing and creative meals and treat recipes that you and/or grandma came up with to keep with you forever or to pass down. Also “HER ERA: An Affirmation Journal for Goals, Health and Wealth”. This Journal was designed and created for any teen, woman or young adult to finally step into HER ERA! So rather you are or need help being organized, staying on track, would like to write down feelings, emotions, maybe wanting to keep track of water intake, workouts, whatever it is this journal has it all! And let’s not forget… you all know that anything that is created by us will always have encouraging or inspirational words within them even the recipe journal! There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Determination, Creativity, Inspiration. My advice is to never give up even when it’s hard find those things that keep you going rather it’s one or many and keep pushing , seek guidance and mentorship, be open to help, don’t let negativity get you down, take negative criticism and turn it in to positive execution, do your research, and most of all love what you do! Rome wasn’t built over night and neither will your business!
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
My number one obstacle or challenge I’m facing is getting my brand out there more being more noticeable this is why I’ve created a children’s coloring book with my kids and now a recipe so that many bakers like me who are either starting out or established can have something they can write down their creativity or new amazing recipes on and a affirmation journal for women, teens, and young adults so they can have an outlet to stay positive, on track and healthy. And with them all being available as a ebook you can print and have forever. Yes we have technology and it’s great but electronics can get forever lost or damaged at least with a physical copy it’s sacred plus it’s very nostalgic which I love!
