We recently connected with Tamara Baranova and have shared our conversation below.
Tamara, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Resilience found me in the middle of two life-changing transitions: moving to a new country and starting over in a completely new profession. Six years ago, I moved to the United States with my husband and daughter. At the same time, I made the bold decision to leave my previous career and pursue something I had never done before — tattooing.
Tattooing, for me, is not just about ink — it’s about people. Some come in to honor someone they’ve lost, others to mark a new chapter in life. And I listen. The conversations we share during sessions have often brought me answers to questions I didn’t even know I was asking. That human connection is one of the most powerful parts of my job — and one of the things that helped me build my own resilience.
One of the most meaningful aspects of my work is offering nipple tattooing for women who’ve undergone breast cancer surgery. These sessions are deeply emotional — and sacred. Being able to help someone reconnect with their body and restore a sense of wholeness after such a traumatic experience is an honor I don’t take lightly. Their strength continues to inspire my own.
So where do I get my resilience from? From starting over — more than once. From finding my voice through art. From the quiet strength that comes from being both a mother and a creator. And from the people who sit in my chair and remind me, session after session, that we’re all a little stronger than we think.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a fine line tattoo artist based in Charlotte, NC, working at TÁTTOMA tattoo studio. I focus on creating personal, meaningful tattoos — from delicate designs to pieces that mark life-changing experiences.
One of the most special parts of my work is tattooing nipples for breast cancer survivors. It’s deeply emotional and healing, and I’m honored to support women in reclaiming their bodies.
What excites me most is the connection with people. Every session is more than just ink — it’s a conversation, a shared story, and a moment of trust. My goal is to make each client feel seen, strong, and proud.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
For me, the three most important qualities have been: 1. Emotional intelligence – working closely with people means listening deeply and creating a safe space.
2. Adaptability – moving to a new country and starting over taught me how to stay flexible and open to growth.
3. Patience and persistence – mastering fine line tattooing takes time, and building a client base doesn’t happen overnight.
My advice: be kind to yourself while you’re learning. Focus on progress, not perfection. And stay curious — every conversation and every tattoo can teach you something new
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My daughter has been my greatest source of strength and motivation. Watching her grow into a strong, kind, and independent young woman reminds me daily why I keep pushing forward. Her presence gives me purpose, and her belief in me fuels my drive to succeed.
