We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tamás Hevér a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tamás, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Working in film taught me pretty early on that things rarely go according to plan. Your budgets shifts, your location burns down, schedules changes every five seconds, creative visions evolve, etc. Instead of resisting to those changes, I think of them as part of the process. That mindset makes it easier to adapt and there is usually no time or energy to get stuck in frustration anyways. Do I still get frustrated? Absolutely but that’s just part of the game. At the end of the day, I care deeply about the story and the people I’m collaborating with. That passion fuels me to push through setbacks.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m currently completing my MFA in film directing at the American Film Institute. For me, filmmaking is this insanely personal and artistic journey about creating experiences. I am the most engaged with materials that feel both cinematic and deeply human. I’m excited to keep developing bold stories and my craft to connect with audiences.
Alongside my directing work, I founded SetSocialz, a boutique media agency that specializes in on-set content for Film and TV marketing. We focus on capturing the energy, creativity, and behind-the-scenes moments that really bring a production to life on social media. What excites me most about SetSocialz is that we’re not just documenting, we’re shaping how projects are introduced to the world and how fans experience them online.
Right now, I’m balancing both paths: honing my craft as a director in school while expanding SetSocialz to work with more productions and exploring new areas like product videos and series promotion.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I’d say the three most important things that shaped my journey so far have been resilience, collaboration, and vision.
Resilience because filmmaking tests you constantly. Constantly. Things fall apart all the time, and your ability to stay calm and keep moving is everything. A director once told me just be calm, positive and confident. I am always trying to do that showing up again and again even when you’re tired, things don’t go your way. Just keep on swimming.
Collaboration is a huge aspect. Learning how to communicate clearly, listen, and create an environment where people feel safe to bring their best ideas. I am always trying to create a space where everyone has a creative experience. (Gary Oldman voice: EVERYONE)
Vision is a funny and weird word but it’s what keeps you grounded when everything else changes. If you know what story you’re trying to tell and why it matters, you can steer through the chaos and make something that feels true to you.
These skills are super important and I am trying to be better at them all the time.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
In the past year, my biggest area of growth has definitely come from my time at AFI. Being in such an intense, collaborative environment has pushed me to grow not just as a director, but as a storyteller and a leader. I’ve learned how to articulate my vision more clearly, while also listening deeply to collaborators and trusting their expertise.
The pace and pressure at AFI is no joke you’re constantly writing, prepping, shooting, and revising and that forced me to become more resilient and adaptable. I’ve improved at making creative decisions quickly, even when resources are limited, and finding solutions that serve the story.
