Meet Tamea Scales

We were lucky to catch up with Tamea Scales recently and have shared our conversation below.

Tamea , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I got my work ethic from my dad. Not only did he keep my on my toes training as a basketball player, I also witnessed him take on various creative projects time and time again and he saw them each all the way through til the very end. From managing the yard of our home to flipping houses, he just exuded this work ethic I thought everyone had and I see now it was just within him. That is a part of me that I will forever hold close to my heart.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
At this point of my career I am focused on developing my skills more as a Costume Designer. In my years leading up to now as a creative, I have been a celebrity stylist assistant, creative director and I have also had the chance to style looks for some of the largest big box retailers. Those skills and creative doings have led me to further my focus as a designer. Being able to read the words from a script and envision how I see those characters has been extremely rewarding. Probably more rewarding than that of a stylist and I honestly couldn’t be happier. I get to create these characters from scratch and share the final product with the world and that in itself brings me much joy.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three areas of knowledge that have been impactful on my journey are, listening more than I speak, not being afraid to ask questions when I don’t know the answer and not being above learning. They may sound like small meaningless skills but they have taken me far in my career and to new heights I did not imagine. I had to listen, because I thought I knew everything. I asked questions because, who doesn’t want to learn more. I am never above learning, because I want to always be a student of the game. With those qualities, I will always strive to be better than I was before, no matter how cliche that may sound.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was nurture my creative side. I went to fine art schools in elementary and middle school. Only reason I did not continue in high school is due to better options sports wise to get into college. Aside from that I was always encouraged to tap into my creative side. I always wanted the art supplies, the art gadgets, the hand paints, the drawing pads, yarn, needle and thread, and even the hallway as my runway to show off new wardrobe ideas. Anything that allowed me to be artistic and creative my parents nurtured that growing up and for those reasons I am grateful. I encourage all parents to nurture the skills they see in their children, you never know where the road will lead them. I have been able to apply my creative side to where I am today and now I have been blessed enough to share those skills with the world.
