We recently connected with Tameka Townes and have shared our conversation below.
Tameka , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I would definitely contribute life experiences to discovering my purpose. Born in Kentucky and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, my childhood was no fairytale. I attended great schools where others nurtured my talents. Later, I suffered a dramatic loss in high school that resulted in me searching for a why. My only outlet was Art. Art saved my life and gave me a path to walk that did not separate my passion from my purpose. Through teaching, I discovered my purpose and doors opened for me that I never saw in my future. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to share my gifts with others through my purpose to change the lives of others through Art.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Ironically, my work combines my passion for teaching and creative purpose. I am a Professional Learning Community Coach and Artist. My weekdays are spent coaching up teachers to provide quality and effective education to over six hundred middle schoolers. Daily, I get to use my creativity to encourage, inspire and promote others. You will be surprised how necessary a creative mind is with highly energetic eleven year olds. I am also an artist and creative consultant. TamCTown is my artistic ego who provides abstract wall art, photography and creative consulting to others. I can truly say I’m blessed to love my jobs.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities or skills that were impactful in my journey were creativity, resilience and patience. As an artist, you have to be patient and resilient. I tell all my former students who continued to pursue artistic careers, believe and stand confident in your gift.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I would love to collaborate with like-minded creatives. The creative sector is promoting so many opportunities for our youth. Please follow my journey as I begin to share my artistic path in arts integration education on my IG: tam_town
