Meet Tamera LaShawn

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tamera LaShawn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tamera below.

Hi Tamera, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I have been singing for more than half of my life. As I say that, I can also say that the journey has not been easy and I have not always known that singing is what I have undeniably wanted to do. As a child, I started off singing in church and have even dabbled in a little bit of screen time where I could use my voice. Eventually I ended up only singing in church and I was fine with that. In the end I knew and still know that my gift of song is from God and I wanted to use it to glorify him. In high school I dedicated all 4 years to show choir where I competed with other high schools and won numerous awards under a wonderful choir director Stefanie Chamberlain. Even at this point, I still didn’t know my purpose. After high school the only music that I did was singing in church choir and with my congregation, which hasn’t changed. It took me 7 years to pick up a pen and officially write my very first song and at that moment I still did not know that singing was my purpose. I never thought that I could sit down and write songs because I had never done it and at that time I wasn’t sure if I was capable, but if not me, then who? So I did. I began to write my own music and the feeling that I had was a feeling that I couldn’t refuse. I am not sure if I was purposely ignoring what my heart desired all along but I can’t see myself doing anything else and once I felt that I knew I had found my purpose.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Tamera LaShawn, Neo-Soul singer and songwriter in Southern California. I love nothing more than creating feel good, uplifting and inspiring music for the soul and for all ages. I desire to be able to create an environment of sound that can be accepted everywhere. When I start to create I have a few goals in mind which consists of having my work be relatable in a way that you can hear your own authentic self as you listen and to create a relaxed space so that you feel every word. The best part of doing what I do is that I can be myself while I am doing it. Not conforming. Only evolving. I have so many different things that I am working on and in the right season those ideas, plans and hard work will come to fruition. In the meantime, you can still stream my already released singles and attend any shows that I have in your area. I would love to see you there!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Dedicating your time to your own development will have a journey of it’s own and nothing will come easy but how you handle it can be a determining factor. I think that it is always important to remember, nothing worth having comes easy but it will be well worth it and as long as you have INTEGRITY, remain HUMBLE and stay LOYAL on your journey it is merely impossible to fail. I found it to be useful to connect with knowledgeable individuals who didn’t mind educating me on the things that I truly didn’t know or answering questions that I may have had and if you find someone like that, cherish them because there aren’t many. Through our own personal growth and journey we should keep in mind that our support comes in rare forms and rarely from those that know us and as long as the consistency is there that support will continue to grow.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
I love doing shoutouts! When I can recognize someone for being amazing I want to! Firstly, GOD! He gets all and I mean ALL of the credit. I wouldn’t be anywhere if it weren’t for him and the gift that I have is because of him and him alone. My family seem to never miss a chance to see me on stage and if they do, trust me it was for a good reason. They are my cheerleaders! My aunt has been such a positive light in my life and is always encouraging and uplifting me to do my best work or not to do it at all. I also have a wonderful engineer and friend, PHOTO NOX! I will always appreciate his work ethic and the integrity that he brings without excuse. Every artist needs a PHOTO NOX in their life and on their journey. I have a hosts of friends that support me and I am grateful. They know exactly who they are! They keep me going.
