We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tami Jo Urban. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tami Jo below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Tami Jo with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

I had amazing mentors when I was a child. The first was a retired Catholic nun who taught art from her home to the neighborhood kids. Her name was Nancy Salvador. She entered my life when I was 7 years old and immediately took me under her wing. The second mentor in my life was Melvin Earl “Mel the Head” McElhiney. I met Mel when I was 18 years old and apprenticed tattooing under his tutelage.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

As an artist, my passion lies in the realm of creating and customizing accessories, transforming ordinary items into unique pieces of art. My aesthetic and creativity flourish as I envision and craft bespoke accessories, infusing them with my personal style and innovative designs. Whether it’s hand-painted purses, sneakers, books or clothes, each creation reflects my artistic expression and attention to detail. I revel in the process of bringing ideas to life, utilizing various materials, colors, and textures to produce one-of-a-kind accessories that stand out and resonate with individuality. My dedication to craftsmanship and love for customization shine through in every piece, inviting others to embrace and celebrate the beauty of wearable art.

The Ordinary Becomes Extraordinary

My vision brings the magic of understated elegance to the lives, spaces, skin and wardrobes of those who command a higher standard.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Be persistent! FEEL your success, be consistent with your brand and keep producing.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

My Mom is my biggest fan. She fostered my interest in art and put me in after-school art classes at 7 years old and continued to encourage me in that path. I stuck with those classes well after graduating high school and college. I began tattooing in 1992, a time when tattoos weren’t as mainstream and respected as they are now, especially for female artists. My parents helped set me up with everything I needed to pursue this passion.
