We recently connected with Tamira Wells and have shared our conversation below.
Tamira, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
In my personal journey towards building confidence, I’ve embraced a multifaceted approach that encompasses various empowering practices. Speaking positive affirmations has become a daily ritual, reshaping my mindset and reinforcing a strong sense of self-belief. Engaging with self-help books has provided invaluable insights and practical advice, serving as a constant source of inspiration for personal development. I’ve found joy and authenticity in expressing myself through my wardrobe, consciously disregarding others’ opinions to cultivate a style that truly resonates with me. Learning about the accomplishments and stories of great individuals has been a profound source of motivation, encouraging me to strive for my own aspirations. Accepting compliments graciously has played a pivotal role in building a positive self-image and acknowledging my worth. Adopting a pescatarian diet reflects my commitment to healthy food choices, contributing not only to my physical well-being but also enhancing my mental clarity. Taking intentional time for myself, including self-dates and pampering sessions, has proven essential in maintaining a healthy balance and nurturing self-love. This holistic approach underscores the diverse ways I’ve cultivated confidence, emphasizing the importance of both internal and external well-being in the pursuit of personal empowerment.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As the proud owner of New Heritage Brand, I find immense joy and purpose in relaunching this legacy brand, paying homage to my late aunt and uncle who were its original founders in the 90s. Fashion has been an integral part of my life since birth, and the opportunity to breathe new life into a brand with such a rich history is truly special. Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, I’ve been living in the vibrant and diverse culture of Los Angeles for the past 14 years. The excitement of owning a legacy brand is heightened by the fact that it holds a significant place in the fashion scenes of iconic 90s movies and shows, including Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, A Different World, Living Single, and Boomerang, to name a few. The relaunch, which took place eight years ago, not only revitalizes the brand but also connects it with a new generation of enthusiasts. I am thrilled to continue the legacy, infusing modern elements while respecting the brand’s historical roots. Stay tuned for upcoming events and product launches as we continue to evolve and celebrate the enduring legacy of New Heritage Brand.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, three key qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge have been instrumental in shaping my path. Firstly, pursuing formal education in fashion provided me with a strong foundation and theoretical understanding of the industry. Attending school allowed me to develop a keen eye for design, understanding trends, and honing technical skills crucial for success. Secondly, working in high-end retail offered invaluable insights into the business side of fashion. Understanding customer preferences, managing inventory, and grasping the dynamics of retail operations proved essential. Lastly, attending trade shows and actively connecting with professionals in the fashion industry broadened my network and provided opportunities for collaboration and growth.
For those early in their journey, my advice is to first invest in education and skill development. Enroll in courses that align with your passion, whether it’s design, business, or a combination. Second, gaining practical experience, especially in retail, can offer a hands-on understanding of the industry’s inner workings. It’s a chance to learn about customer behavior, marketing, and the day-to-day operations of a fashion business. Lastly, networking is key. Attend trade shows, industry events, and fashion weeks to connect with like-minded individuals. Building relationships with professionals can open doors to mentorship, collaborations, and valuable insights.
Remember, the fashion industry is dynamic, and a combination of education, practical experience, and networking can set a strong foundation for a successful and fulfilling journey. Stay curious, be open to learning, and embrace the opportunities that come your way.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The primary challenge I am currently facing revolves around juggling the responsibilities of being a single mom, working a full-time job, and simultaneously growing New Heritage. Balancing these commitments can be overwhelming, but I am actively taking steps to address this challenge. One of the key strategies I’ve adopted is seeking support from communities and mommy groups. By joining these groups, I aim to connect with fellow parents who understand the unique challenges I face. These communities provide a valuable space to share experiences, exchange advice, and potentially find assistance when needed. Additionally, I am learning to delegate tasks and ask for help, recognizing that it’s crucial to build a support system both personally and professionally. By fostering connections within these communities and being open to seeking assistance, I hope to navigate the demands of single parenthood, a full-time job, and the growth of New Heritage more effectively.
