We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tamisha. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tamisha below.
Hi Tamisha, so excited to have you with us today and we are really interested in hearing your thoughts about how folks can develop their empathy? In our experience, most folks want to be empathic towards others, but in a world where we are often only surrounded by people who are very similar to us, it can sometimes be a challenge to develop empathy for others who might not be as similar to us. Any thoughts or advice?
Some conditions that allowed me to develop my empathy is being a single mother of three, being homeless, and being in places that doesn’t always welcome my type with open arms. It’s hard to keep afloat these days but understanding that you have to be true to yourself first and keep fighting allowed me to flourish within my business and personal life as well. I understand that it takes a community to actually thrive in this world no one person can do anything alone. I’ve managed to run my business and home school two out of three of my children, ( my oldest is running her business Mrs.ChocoatesGoods as well) work with multiple non profit and community organization, and other things that I do out of love for my community and it feels like this is what I’ve been placed here to do. My children are watching and their learning and how they carry themselves when they outside and the kind words about them I receive about their character makes all I do even more worth wild!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Mishas Beauty is my business that I have been running for the last five years! You can follow my work on Instagram, Tic Toc, and Facebook. Im a hairstylist from Brooklyn Ny. I’ve been In Binghamton NY for about 16years now on and off. My focus when it comes to the beauty industry is natural hair care, protective styles no chemical processing. I’ve stuck to no chemicals because health wise it’s no good for us. I’ve focused on making my business family oriented because us moms and dads don’t always have time to get away to take care of self so when we need to bring our children along they are more than welcomed. I work from home so that it allows my client and their family to be comfortable and children can play and stay calm while their parent is being beautified! As much as I love my New York clients we are relocating to Florida by the end of the year 2025 so we can share the love and get us some sun and beach in our lives!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities that were most impactful to me was organization, patients, and consistency. I’m not the best with Organization but I’ve come to realize without it (at least practing) it can become overwhelming and start to show in your work. Patients had shown me that energy can easily be passed to whom ever is in your 6 feet circle. This can work against or for you so choose wisely. My clients always speak on consistency and how they are always pleased at the end repeat and practice of your craft is necessary.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My 18 year old Zania had been my biggest help. Her understanding and helpful demeanor has helped me when I didn’t think this wasn’t going to work. She helps me raise her siblings and also grow my business. She smiles when I don’t want to and I couldn’t have a better partner and support system than her! It gets no better in my opinion.
