We recently connected with Tamiya Matlock and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tamiya, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Overcoming imposter syndrome has been a journey. But I’ve learned to tackle it step by step. One of the biggest things was believing in the product. I reminded myself that Crown Couture Hair Growth Oil is something I’m passionate about. It’s not just a random idea—I spent time researching, testing, and perfecting the formula, which includes over 21 oils. Knowing the benefits it offers gave me confidence in its value. Celebrating small wins made a big difference. Whether it was finalizing the formula or getting positive feedback from people who tried the oil, those moments validated the hard work I’d put in and reminded me that I was on the right track. I dove into learning everything I could about hair care and entrepreneurship. Imposter syndrome feeds off self-doubt, and the more prepared I felt, the less power those doubts had. I surrounded myself with positive people who believed in me, and I also connected with other entrepreneurs. Hearing their stories made me realize I wasn’t alone—imposter syndrome is something a lot of people face. Crown Couture helps people achieve healthy, beautiful hair. Staying focused on that purpose keeps me motivated, even when doubt tries to creep in. Believe in your purpose and your work. Celebrate the small victories, stay open to learning, and don’t be afraid to lean on your support system. Growth takes time, but you’re more capable than you think.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Absolutely!
My name is Tamiya, and I’m the founder of Crown Couture, a hair care brand that’s all about empowering people to feel confident in their natural beauty. Crown Couture Hair Growth Oil is my flagship product—a formula crafted with over 21 premium oils designed to promote healthy hair growth, reduce breakage, and strengthen hair from root to tip.
What makes Crown Couture so special is that it’s not just about hair care; it’s about self-care. I’ve always believed that when you take care of yourself—inside and out—it shows. This product was born out of my journey with hair health, as well as my passion for creating solutions that genuinely work. Every bottle represents my commitment to helping others embrace their crowns.
Right now, I’m gearing up for some exciting new developments. I’m preparing for the official launch of Crown Couture Hair Growth Oil and considering offering pre-orders to give people early access. This journey has been incredible, and seeing the positive feedback from testers has truly motivated me to keep pushing.
Aside from Crown Couture, I’m also working on building my brand as a storyteller and content creator. My YouTube channel, Tamiya Kishawnee, focuses on lifestyle, digital marketing and home content.
At the heart of everything I do is a passion for connecting with people, whether it’s through helping them feel confident with their hair, sharing stories, or providing relatable and inspiring content. I’m excited about what’s ahead and can’t wait to see where this journey takes me!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I’d say the three most impactful qualities in my journey have been resilience, a willingness to learn, and authenticity.
1. Resilience: Building Crown Couture and developing my brand hasn’t been easy. There were moments of doubt, setbacks, and times when it felt like progress was slow. But staying resilient—pushing through challenges and staying committed to my vision—has been key. My advice? Embrace the tough moments as part of the process. Growth happens when you keep going, even when it’s hard.
2. A Willingness to Learn: I didn’t have all the answers when I started, but I was open to learning. Whether it was researching hair care ingredients, studying marketing strategies, or improving my storytelling skills, being curious and proactive made a huge difference. For anyone starting their journey, I’d say: stay humble, seek knowledge, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. The more you learn, the more confident you’ll become.
3. Authenticity: Staying true to who I am and why I started has been my greatest strength. Whether it’s creating a product or sharing my story, I’ve found that people connect most with honesty and realness. My advice here is to be yourself. Don’t feel pressured to follow trends or fit a mold. Your uniqueness is your superpower, and that’s what will set you apart.
For those just starting, remember that your journey won’t be perfect, and that’s okay. Focus on progress, not perfection, and trust that every step—big or small—is moving you closer to your goals. Stay open, stay resilient, and stay true to yourself. You’ve got this!

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
Over the past 12 months, my biggest area of growth has been confidence in my vision and my voice. A year ago, I often second-guessed myself—whether it was decisions about Crown Couture or my content creation on YouTube. I spent a lot of time worrying about whether I was “ready” or “good enough.”
Now, I’ve learned to trust myself more. I’ve realized that perfection isn’t the goal—authenticity is. Launching my podcast, creating storytime videos on YouTube, and perfecting my hair growth oil formula have all been steps that pushed me out of my comfort zone. Through it all, I’ve grown more confident in my ability to create something valuable and connect with people.
The turning point came when I stopped waiting for the “perfect” time or circumstances. Instead, I leaned into the process and reminded myself that growth happens during the journey, not before it. I’m more decisive, I speak up for my ideas, and I’ve learned to take pride in the progress I’ve made so far.
For me, it’s been about showing up consistently, even when it’s uncomfortable. That’s where the growth happens—and I’m proud of how far I’ve come in just a year.
