We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tammy Cavallucci a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tammy, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I have always grown up never sure or had any confidence or self-esteem. I was blessed to have a child when the doctor’s told me it was going to be impossible. I decided to make the decision to quit my day office job in the dental field and stay home to be with my one and only child. It was then I decided to start my baking journey. I started off not very confident in my ability or talent in decorating. I stayed within my little box of just creating simple treats. With the encouragement of my husband and friends they helped me realize that I can decorate just as well as any professional baker out there who went to culinary school or is professionally trained. With lots of hard work and dedication and the encouragement of the baking community in Instagram, meeting other bakers and the support of my wonderful family did I finally get the confidence and self-esteem to create the tasty treats I create today as well as now teaching classes.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I have always enjoyed baking for my family around the holidays. We have a family tradition of Thanksgiving weekend where I bake with my child and make holiday cookies all weekend long. When I decided to quit my office job in 2014, I figured it was the best time to start a new journey. Baking was that new journey for me. I love creating recipes so that taste is never compromised. I believe everyone can have beautiful treats without sacrificing the taste and for any budget, I love creating treats for all occasions and being part of special events. Knowing that people will enjoy the taste as well as the beauty makes me feel like there is a purpose in my life.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Instagram baking community has been one of my areas of knowledge. If it wasn’t for meeting and making new friends, I wouldn’t have increased my knowledge of different techniques and tools to be the baker I am today. If you’re thinking of starting a new business, then I highly recommend getting on social media and make new friends.
Don’t be afraid to research. I am always learning something new even after baking and running my business for almost 10 years. If I don’t know something or not sure I have always utilized my skills in researching and getting the answers. You have to put in the hard work to become successful.
I’ve always been organized and care so deeply about people and their feelings. I always put myself in their shoes to know how I would feel. This caring skill has helped me to provide amazing customer service to all of my clients. I reply asap, make them feel like they are important to me and their event is just as important to me as it is to them. I provide small little things to help them make life a little easier such as delivery, curbside pickup, or just having conversations with them.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
When I met my husband over 20 years ago, I was a very shy and quiet person. I never made decisions because I was worried about upsetting someone. I never voiced my opinions because I didn’t think it would matter. I never talked to anyone unless they came up to me and started a conversation. I was a very different person back then. Since I met my husband, he has taught me so much of how to be true to myself. He gave me confidence to speak up when I didn’t agree with something. He made me feel that I mattered, my opinions mattered and that I needed to learn to make decisions on my own. He taught me to be who I am and don’t change for anyone else. Because of him is why I have developed the skills and overcame some of these challenges to be able to run my successful business that I run today. The skills have taught me get out of my comfort zone and talk to people. I have gained so much more confidence to branch out and try things that I thought I was too scared to do.
