We recently connected with Tammy Griggs and have shared our conversation below.
Tammy , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Without a doubt, my work ethic comes from my mother, Helen Whittaker. She is the toughest, hardest working person I know. At an age where most people slow down and look forward to retiring, my mother opens a restaurant instead!
Aptly named “Helen’s Place”. She raised three children as a single mother and taught us the value of showing up and doing
the work without excuses. She is an amazing role model and an absolute inspiration to never give up on your dreams!
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I own a company called URTHCUR and I help people achieve better health naturally. I make a powerful wellness tonic that helps strengthen your immune system with natural organic ingredients like garlic, onions, horseradish
root, ginger, elderberry, and turmeric. I love natural remedies and I believe in the bodies
natural ability to help heal itself. It’s very exciting to help someone turn their health around! But I find
that most people don’t know where to begin so I have put together 3 wellness kits with my favorite go-to
products! Something for everyone, whether you are prone to sinus congestion, lung congestion, or a cough
that lingers endlessly. I am also working on several new products that will be launching soon that will help get you back on your feet asap! I want URTHCUR to be your “one-stop feel better shop”.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I feel the 3 most important skills that have had a huge impact on my journey are: number 1; being resourceful; having the ability to figure things out. This skill alone can take you places talent can’t. Focusing on the solution and not the problem! Once I know what the problem is, I throw all my energy at the solution. You only need to find the one way something can be achieved.
Number two: Seek wise counsel through mentorship. It’s like getting into the fast lane on the freeway to your goals. The quickest possible way to get to where you want to go. But only choose mentors who have achieved exactly what you want to do. Otherwise, it’s like asking someone for directions to a place they’ve never been!
Lastly, courage. Courage is a superpower. You have to have almost a blind faith in yourself and your ability to figure
things out because most people won’t support you in the beginning. People will spend more time trying steer you off the road to your dreams then encourage you to keep going, because somewhere along the line they gave up on their dreams. One time speaking with my accountant, I shared my new product idea and was astounded at the reaction I got. I was so excited about what I had created and proudly displayed the bottles on her desk and what she said next, I will never forget. She looked at me and said “That is the dumbest idea I have ever heard of! YOU HAVE A HUSBAND!” I leaned in and whispered, “I don’t know if you’ve heard, but we can actually vote now too!”.
So stayed determined and live courageously! It is better to fail than to never try!
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
There are two very important books that come to mind for any small business owner. The first one is called “The E Myth Revisited” by Michael E. Gerber. I really wish I had read this book sooner in my journey because the information inside is invaluable. Don’t judge this book by it’s cover, because while it may look unassuming it’s filled with holy grail information to get your business to the next level. One little nugget of wisdom was understanding the 3 identities of small business types, the Entrepreneur, the Technician, and the Manager. Most people get stuck doing the technician’s work and burn out quickly. The author also makes the distinction between working on your business and working in your business.
The second book is “Who Moved My Cheese” by Dr. Spencer Johnson. A terrific little book about learning to spot and adapt to inevitable change in your personal life and your business. I always recommend this book to friends because of it’s simple profound truths.
