We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tamra Simmons. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tamra below.
Tamra, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Being the only one in the room has been both a challenge and a catalyst for growth. Early on, I realized that while I couldn’t always control the dynamics of a room, I could control how I showed up in it. I learned to turn what felt like isolation into opportunity—an opportunity to bring a unique perspective, to represent not just myself but others who may not have had a seat at the table yet.
Over time, I’ve become comfortable with using my voice with confidence, even when it’s uncomfortable. I’ve leaned into preparation, built strategic relationships, and learned to let my work speak clearly—even when I felt unseen. At the same time, I’ve made a point to reach back and create space for others.
Success in those rooms isn’t just about surviving—it’s about shifting culture, planting seeds, and making sure that one day, I’m not the only one anymore.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a storyteller, producer, and strategist who’s passionate about creating impactful content that not only entertains but also inspires change. Whether I’m developing true crime series, scripted projects, or working behind the scenes with brands and entrepreneurs, my focus is always on uncovering authentic voices and stories that deserve to be heard.
What excites me most is the power of storytelling to shift perspectives and spark conversation. There’s something incredibly special about taking a real-life experience—especially one that’s often overlooked—and giving it the care, depth, and visibility it deserves. I’m drawn to stories that center around truth, transformation, and legacy.
Right now, I’m expanding in a few exciting ways. We’re in development on several new projects, including a documentary series that spotlights financial fraud and deception in the nonprofit world, as well as a scripted show rooted in family, faith, and entrepreneurship. On the consulting side, I’m also helping wellness and lifestyle brands elevate their marketing through intentional storytelling and community-driven campaigns.
At the core of everything I do is a commitment to integrity, impact, and making space for others. Whether it’s in media or business, I believe in creating platforms where purpose and profit can coexist—and thrive.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, the three most impactful qualities in my journey have been resilience, emotional intelligence, and strategic storytelling.
Resilience – There will always be moments when things don’t go as planned—doors close, people doubt you, or you have to start over. What’s carried me through is the ability to bounce back, refocus, and stay grounded in purpose even in uncertainty. For anyone just starting, know that setbacks are part of the process. Learn from them, don’t personalize them, and keep going.
Emotional Intelligence – Understanding how to read a room, communicate across different perspectives, and lead with empathy has made all the difference in how I build partnerships and navigate challenges. If you’re looking to grow in this area, practice active listening, seek feedback often, and stay curious about people’s experiences—not just your own.
Strategic Storytelling – Whether pitching a show, building a brand, or advocating for change, the ability to tell a clear, compelling story is a superpower. It’s not just about what you say—it’s about how you make people feel. To develop this skill, study great communicators, read widely, and constantly refine your message until it moves both hearts and minds.
My biggest piece of advice: invest just as much in your character as you do in your craft. Your talent might open the door, but your consistency, humility, and vision are what will keep you in the room.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Yes, I’m always open to meaningful collaboration—especially with people who lead with integrity, creativity, and purpose. I’m looking to partner with producers, writers, creatives, brands, and entrepreneurs who are passionate about storytelling that drives impact, shifts culture, or sparks honest conversation.
Whether it’s developing original content, launching purpose-driven campaigns, or creating something that speaks to underrepresented communities, I believe in building with people who value alignment over hype and are committed to excellence with heart.
