We recently connected with Tanajah and have shared our conversation below.
Tanajah, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
My optimism comes from experience—every time I thought things were falling apart, they were actually falling into place. Maybe not in the way I originally planned, but somehow, I always ended up with the result I needed. That pattern has shown up in my life so many times that now, even when things feel uncertain, I trust that they’ll work out. It’s not blind optimism—it’s just knowing that life has a way of aligning things, even when you don’t see it right away.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m Tanajah, a hip-hop artist originally from Germantown, Maryland, now based in Raleigh, North Carolina. My journey in music began with freestyling in middle school, and over the years, I’ve developed a unique sound that blends rhythmic precision with lyrical depth.
I’m excited about my upcoming music releases and the opportunity to perform in more countries worldwide. ‘ll be collaborating with NuBreeze, a band based in Germany, on a new project. I will also be releasing my third EP in late spring in 2026. My latest EP, What If Dreams Came True?, is available on all streaming services! You can also explore more of my music by visiting my official website, Tanajahraps.com.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the three qualities that had the biggest impact on my journey were initiative, resilience, and adaptability.
Initiative was key because, early on, I realized no one was going to hand me opportunities—I had to create them. After months of trying to get booked with no luck, I reached out to The Pinhook and set up my own show. That one decision led to a chain reaction of bookings and opened doors I never expected.
Resilience kept me going through the setbacks. I’ve lost money, dealt with unreliable band members, and faced countless obstacles. But each challenge gave me the experience to navigate the industry better. The setbacks weren’t roadblocks; they were lessons that made me stronger.
Adaptability has been crucial in figuring things out as I go. No two shows, audiences, or business situations are ever the same, and I’ve had to adjust on the fly—whether that means performing solo when a bandmate cancels or learning new ways to promote my music.
For anyone just starting out, my advice is to take action before you feel ready—don’t wait for someone to give you a shot, create your own. Expect setbacks and learn from them—the tough moments will teach you more than the easy wins. And finally, stay flexible and open to change—the industry is always evolving, and the more adaptable you are, the further you’ll go.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
The person who has been most helpful in overcoming challenges and developing the skills I need to succeed is me. Every day, I push myself to be better, to go harder, and to grow. No one holds me to a higher standard than I do. While prayer and meditation keep me grounded, and I recognize that God is guiding me, I am the one who puts in the work, stays disciplined, and keeps moving forward. My success is a direct result of my determination and willingness to push past limits
