We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tangela Nelson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tangela , we are so appreciative of you taking the time to open up about the extremely important, albeit personal, topic of mental health. Can you talk to us about your journey and how you were able to overcome the challenges related to mental issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
In my life I’ve lost my mom, dad, father of my children and other family members. Most recently tragedy struck again. My son JOVON came up missing, we looked for him for twenty three days and on the twenty fourth day he was found in the calumet river.
When I first created Sandwichqueen I created in honor of my mother who was diagnosed with cancer at the young age of 12. Having to take care of my mom taught me how to cook for sick people and well people. I put grief into cooking for people who can’t cook for themselves or maybe they just need a lunch. That’s how I was dealing with mental health.
After the death of my son JOVON has me looking for peace in the kitchen. Mental health is real. Some people just work through it. I’ve had some challenges in life and to find comfort i like to create something new and enjoy the customer or person who likes it reaction. You will face challenges in life we just have to find something to cope with.
I’ve started a foundation in honor of my son JOVON Nelson who was recently in the news media he went missing on April 9,2024 found in Lake Michigan may 1, 2024.

We’re hoping to get sponsorships for mental health, crisis management, missing persons assistance, grief counseling etc.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
SandwichQueen was founded in 2020 right before the pandemic. The owner Tangela walked around with a wagon selling sandwiches and lemonade and tea. Later purchased a food truck soon after opening a few locations. Just recently opened a location in The Hyatt house Hotel 1811 W Harrison st formally known as the Old cook county hospital where I was born at.
I created this business to create generational wealth to help my children learn skills and stay busy with me so they can be able to take care of their families but everyone has their own hopes and dreams. Hopefully one day families and friends will come together to help make this business a big business.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Having a good plan in place is crucial. As a business owner things happen life happens fast and you have to have someone or others to lean on. Learn your business so no one else can tell you how to run it! Protect your brand make sure you know who you’re letting in your company. Some of the things I wasn’t prepared for.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
Most recently losing my son caused me to have to close my business down for some time and now that we’re back open I’m trying to get customers back and maybe even partnering up with another brand to get my products back out there would be ideal.
