We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tangie Jackson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tangie, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I overcame imposter syndrome by continuing to show up for myself and my brand. There were many times when I felt like I was not good enough to be a sneaker style content creator or I felt like there were other sneakerheads that people would like more than me and what I had to offer. I wanted to quit. I felt like my brand was not growing and maybe I should not have even started THIS CHICK’S GOT KICKS! But I kept going. I kept showing up and the more I showed up, the more I built my confidence. I started to really FEEL like I can do this and I AM DOING THIS! I started to BELIEVE that there is room for me in this space and I belong here. I started to BELIEVE that I am talented and I can 100% style sneakers and create amazing content. I overcame imposter syndrome when I started to “believe.”
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a sneaker style content creator based in Atlanta, Georgia. I absolutely LOVE sneakers and always have so I have taken this love for sneakers and created a brand called THIS CHICK’S GOT KICKS! This brand is for the female sneakerhead who is bold and loving her sneakers unapologetically! I empower the female sneakerheads to wear those sneakers loud and proud!
THIS CHICK’S GOT KICKS! has cool, staple clothing pieces that can tie into any outfit with your sneakers. I want to make it easy for the sneaker girls to put together fly outfits while feeling confident and cool while rockin’ the brand.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities, skills or areas of knowledge that were most impactful on my journey:
Perserverance. I kept going no matter how I felt, even on the hard days.
Creative – I am a creative at heart so coming up with cool, new outfits and content for my brand comes pretty easy for me.
Photography – The fact that I’m a photographer really helped me on the journey in creating THIS CHICK’S GOT KICKS! I never had to struggle with how to create content or how to get quality photos because I already had knowledge in this area. I get so many compliments on the quality of my content and it really is because I’m a photographer and know all about how to get great shots and editing.
My advice to new content creators is to take the time to improve your photography and videography skills. This can really help you to put out the best quality content and draw your audience in.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I’m feeling overwhelmed, I take a step back and rest – both mentally and physically. It is so important to listen to your mind and body when you’re starting to feel stressed. For me, this looks like taking a break from creating content for a little while. Also, taking the time to get to the root of what is causing me to feel overwhelmed. A lot of times it is me stressing over things with the brand that I cannot even control.
So then what do I do? I always go back to the “why.” Why did I start THIS CHICK’S GOT KICKS! brand? I started this brand because I LOVE sneakers and I LOVE styling sneaker looks. I also want to empower other sneaker girls with my brand. So then I get right back into the game and keep going. When I can focus more on the passion and the “why” – it gets me back into a good mental state where I’m able to do my thing and keep it moving.
