We recently connected with Tara Brooks and have shared our conversation below.
Tara, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I developed my confidence & self esteem after years of hard work on my craft, adapting to new environments, overcoming challenges, & the daily practice of believing in myself. Confidence & self esteem have the ability to show up strong & powerfully, but doesn’t mean you won’t have days of feeling fragile or timid. I don’t believe you can truly have a true sense of confidence without having experienced some insecurity or doubt. One of the beauties of djing is that no two sets will ever be the same. While technology continues to evolve & dj equipment, tuning, & sound production, are at the highest quality, every booth & room is unique, so you’ll always be on your toes, even if you’re confident in yourself & skills. I remember many early gigs where a speaker was blown, a cdj was broken, and I just had to adapt & figure it out on the fly. It was terrifying, created anxiety, yet was rewarding to learn to perform under pressure. No matter what unexpected challenge was thrown at me, I handled it with strength & confidence. So the more awkward, uncomfortable, or even embarassing situations, I went through, the greater & more confident I became in music and in life.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Im an electronic dance music dj & producer from Los Angeles California. I’ve been djing since 2007, & producing since 2012, My passion for music & connecting with people through sounds & energy, quickly escalated when I discovered the healing power of music & vibrations. I’m grateful to have traveled much of the world playing & sharing music. Experiencing cultures & continuously being reminded that ‘music is a universal language’ is what inspires me.
I started surfing during the pandemic & it deeply touched & changed my life. My goal now is to dj as much as possible in surf and snow destinations. I’m motivated & passionate in sharing this love with the music industry, as many suffer from emotional & mental health issues, & nothing to me is more healing than the ocean.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Staying true to myself and sounds, experimenting & taking risks, not taking rejection personally, & never ever giving up!! 4 haha
Its crazy how many ways there is to be influenced today. instead of following trends. Listen to yourself. You have an identity that is only yours! Don’t be afraid to share & own it!
Theres more competition today then ever before and sometimes no matter how hard you work, things don’t always work out. It can hurt and be discouraging but sometimes timing is everything & when one door closes another opens. if you’re doing things the right way, things will come together.
Your attitude, how you treat others & yourself is everything.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
