Meet Tara Hilmes

We were lucky to catch up with Tara Hilmes recently and have shared our conversation below.

Tara, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
My confidence definitely came with time and age. Every time I accomplished something I’d previously thought I wasn’t able to, my confidence grew. Starting in nursing school, throughout my career in nursing, and continuing my graduate education, my confidence has developed into what it is today.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I own a medical spa, where we help people look and feel their best. I love to see the look on someone’s face when they look in the mirror after a treatment and see a face they haven’t seen in years. Not only do we provide aesthetic services, we also provide hormone and weight loss services to help people feel their best. I love when a patient tells me they felt better than they have felt in years. I have just expanded and brought on another nurse practitioner, nurse, and esthetician to be able to serve as many people as possible.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
-Being willing to take risks is the reason I have accomplished what I have, Every step that has led me here involved taking a risk. They are calculated risks, I don’t advocate being careless. But after carefully weighing the pros and cons of a situation, I do not back away if the benefits outweigh the risks. -Being able to read a situation and using my intuition. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. I try to never “force” anything. I pay attention to people, and use what I observe to my advantage.
-Taking things one step at a time. Focusing on the end result of a goal can be very overwhelming. For example when I decided to go to graduate school, I was concerned with the number of years it would take. But I realized those years were going to pass by no matter what I chose to do, and I could either have a Master’s degree at the end or have nothing to show for it. When starting my business, I knew I wanted to someday own my own practice, but the thought of all that was involved with that was very overwhelming. So, I started very small and just took it day by day, reinvested in myself and my business, until I grew to the point I wanted to be from the beginning.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I wouldn’t be where I am without my husband, Not only does he provide physical support through helping me manage our day-to-day home life, kids, pets, using his skills to do things I am unable to – he has given me the confidence I need to accomplish what I have. Having a loving partner who constantly builds my self esteem and confidence for 20 years has made me who I am.
