We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tariq McAllister a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tariq, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from never seeing a loss as a failure. As I grow in my field, we are bound to make mistakes or take losses as humans but I refuse to accept it as a failure. As long as I learn from my mistakes & am able to get back up & keep going forward, “failure” will never hold me back.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I currently work in the marketing department at Capitol Records. I get the opportunity to provide support to my senior staff & ideate/execute creative marketing campaigns to better expose artists on our roster. I also throw events & parties in LA with my own event group. I am most excited about growing in the marketing space & becoming a high level executive as well as a successful entrepreneur.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Resilience helped me never take “no” for an answer & to continue to strive for my goals.
Always putting my best foot forward allowed me to get into rooms that I may not have been able get into if I didn’t give my best effort everyday.
Passion helped me continue to strive for success regardless of the amount of “no’s” I was given. It helped me discover my purpose & give 110% effort to my advancement in it.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The Basic Ideas of Science of Mind had a quote that changed my way of thinking. “My thoughts control my experience & I can direct my thinking”. Whenever I feel upset or defeated, this always helped me realize that I control how I let the world around me affect me.
