We were lucky to catch up with Tarryn Hoff recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tarryn, thank you so much for joining us today. There are so many topics we could discuss, but perhaps one of the most relevant is empathy because it’s at the core of great leadership and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your empathy?
The conditions that allowed me to develop my empathy were rooted in years of working one-on-one with people from all walks of life—each with their own struggles, stories, and motivations. As a personal trainer and exercise psychologist, I learned early on that success in health and fitness isn’t just about physical strength; it’s about understanding the emotional journey behind each client’s effort.
Over the past 25 years, I’ve worked with seniors regaining mobility, young athletes chasing dreams, and clients battling chronic conditions or self-doubt. Listening to their stories taught me to slow down, to truly hear people beyond their words, and to connect through shared humanity rather than instruction. My background in performance psychology deepened that skill, giving me the language to understand emotion, motivation, and resilience.
Empathy for me was developed not in the classroom, but in the quiet moments—when a client confided in me about a personal loss, when a student shared their anxiety before defending their dissertation, or when a person showed up to train despite the weight of life’s challenges. Those moments reminded me that empathy is not just feeling for someone; it’s standing with them in that space, without judgment, and helping them believe in their own capacity to grow stronger.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m Dr. Tarryn Hoff — also known as The Traveling Trainer — and I’m the founder of GoTarryn! Health & Fitness, a personal training brand based in Atlanta (Buckhead), Georgia. For over 25 years, I’ve dedicated my career to helping people transform their health from the inside out through exercise, psychology, and purpose-driven coaching. My approach goes beyond physical fitness — I focus on the why behind the workout, helping each client reconnect with their motivation, mindset, and long-term well-being.
What makes my work special is the deeply personal connection I build with every individual I train. I bring my background as an exercise psychologist and performance coach into every session, using science-backed principles from self-determination theory to inspire sustainable change. My clients aren’t just chasing short-term results — they’re building lifelong habits of strength, confidence, and balance.
Beyond training, I also teach and mentor doctoral students in psychology and performance, blending academia with real-world application. Through my video blog GoTarryn TV, I feature inspiring professionals, share educational content, and spread messages about living younger, longer, and stronger — no matter your age or background.
This year, I’m especially excited about expanding my senior wellness programs across Buckhead and beyond. My presentations — like “The Role of Balance and Fall Prevention in Healthy Aging” and my upcoming talk “Living Younger: The Science of Longevity and Movement” — bring evidence-based, interactive fitness to the senior community in fun, engaging ways.
Ultimately, my mission is simple: to empower others to take ownership of their health, rediscover their potential, and live vibrantly — for life.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the three most impactful qualities in my journey have been resilience, empathy, and lifelong learning.
Resilience taught me to adapt and stay focused when challenges arose — whether it was building my business from scratch, pursuing my Ph.D. while raising a family, or navigating setbacks in life and career. True growth happens when you learn to pivot instead of pause. My advice to those early in their journey is this: expect the road to twist and turn, and let each obstacle refine you rather than define you.
Empathy became the cornerstone of everything I do. As a personal trainer and exercise psychologist, I learned that transformation doesn’t start with a workout — it starts with understanding. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. Developing empathy means listening deeply, withholding judgment, and meeting people where they are — physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Finally, lifelong learning has kept me evolving. The world of health, fitness, and psychology is constantly changing, and staying curious allows me to better serve others. I tell my students and clients that mastery isn’t about knowing it all — it’s about remaining a student of life, every single day.
For anyone starting out, remember: your mindset will determine your direction. Build resilience through perseverance, deepen empathy through connection, and fuel growth through curiosity — and success will follow.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is someone who is ready to make a genuine change — not just in their body, but in their mindset and lifestyle. I love working with people who are open-minded, consistent, and willing to put in the effort, even when progress feels slow. The best clients aren’t necessarily athletes or fitness enthusiasts — they’re everyday individuals who are ready to rediscover their strength, take ownership of their health, and invest in their own well-being.
What truly makes someone an ideal client is commitment — showing up for themselves, trusting the process, and embracing both the physical and emotional sides of transformation. I’ve worked with seniors rebuilding balance, professionals managing stress, and people recovering from setbacks — and the common thread among my most successful clients is heart.
If you bring passion, patience, and a willingness to learn, I’ll bring the expertise, encouragement, and accountability to help you become the healthiest, happiest version of yourself.
