We recently connected with Tas Mariam and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tas, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I developed my confidence and self-esteem through years of patience and observation – dating back to my high school years. When you graduate from high school and step into the real world, you quickly realize that all of your peers’ lives are shifting in different directions. It can be an intimidating time, defined by parental expectations and peer pressure. It can be easy to get caught up in your surroundings and be influenced by what others are doing; you can lose yourself in this whirlwind and miss the opportunity to determine your own intentions or your own path. At that young age, I challenged myself and asked, “Do I want to take the path of my peers, or should I pave a different route for myself?” I always knew I wanted something of my own, and I’ve stayed with that vision over the years – through the ups and the downs. In creating TAS Events & Design and breaking through in the event industry, I faced many challenges. But by defining my vision early on – and sticking to it – I was able to grow my business authentically and develop a truly unique identity, and my confidence has certainly benefited from that over the years.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am an event decor and production designer, leading the team at TAS Events & Design. I got into the event industry because I wanted to help people celebrate the most important and precious moments in their lives, and I treasure being able to get up every day and do what I love. It’s nothing short of pure bliss. Initially, I started off focusing solely on weddings – primarily of the South Asian variety – but, through the years, we have expanded significantly. Now, I enjoy producing a variety of special events, such as brand launches, galas, grand openings, non-profit events, and more. Each field of events has expanded the way my team and I think and approach different elements of what we do, whether it be design or purpose or function. That may be what I enjoy the most – that no two events are ever the same.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Without question, my values of resilience, patience, and faith have been instrumental along my journey, carrying me through the ups and downs of entrepreneurship.
My advice to anyone who is early in their journey is to define and stay focused on your vision. Despite the distractions, the highs, and the lows, it’s important to remember why you started what you started. And, in due time, evolve if necessary.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My parents heavily exposed me to traveling at a young age, which ended up being quite key to my success. As a kid, we traveled all around the world, exploring some of its most rural and most refined parts. Each of those experiences exposed me to diversity and broadened my view of the world. They provided me with experiences and lessons that would ultimately shape me into the person I am today, and I am grateful to them.
