We were lucky to catch up with Tasha Beckstead recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Tasha with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic comes from building everything I have from scratch. I started in this industry 12 years ago with nothing but a dream and a determination to make it in this career path. I moved to Utah with absolutely nothing to my name, I worked every single day to make ends meet, and I refused to settle until I built one of the most successful and respected salons in Utah.
That journey shaped me into someone who does not wait for opportunities. I create them. I show up for myself, my team, and for my clients every single day. Portfolio. is known for its standard of excellence because we have built a culture where hard work is not optional, it is who we are. We do not just keep up with the industry, we set the pace.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Portfolio. Hair Salon is a destination for luxury hair in Utah. We are best known for our signature extension methods, advanced knowledge on all things color, and for building a tema of stylists who are trained to deliver the kind of results you usually have to travel to a big city for. We value the experience that each of the guests have as well. We pride ourselves on being a small pocket of peace in such a busy world.
Our focus right now is growing our extension certification program and mentoring the next generation of stylists so they can raise the bar in their own communities. Portfolio. was built from the ground up with one goal in mind, and that was to create a salon where clients feel transformed and where stylists can become the best versions of themselves.
My own path in this industry was anything but easy, and that is why I created our 12 week training program. I wanted to give stylists the kind of guidance and education I wish I had when I started, so they can avoid the rough patch that so many go through. My stylists’ success is something that I take personally, and my goal is for them to flourish in their careers.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, the three things that completely shaped my career : resilience, business education, and leadership.
Resilience was everything for me in the early days. I had to keep showing up even when it was hard. I pushed through slow months, financial struggles, and moments where walking away would have been easier.
Business education was another turning point. Many stylists focus only on their craft, but understanding pricing, marketing, and profitability is what allows you to build a lasting career. That is one of the reasons I chose to own an employee-based salon. I wanted to take the pressure off stylists to figure out business on their own and create a place where they could focus on growth, education, creativity, and their clients without worrying about payroll taxes or how to fill their books.
Finally leadership. Owning a salon taught me quickly that you are only as strong as the team around you. I learned how important it is to mentor, set expectations, communicate clearly, and lead by example. My advice to anyone starting out would be to focus on building those three things.. grit, business knowledge, and leadership skills. They will open doors you do not even know exist yet.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
My biggest growth this year has been learning to trust my team and give them more opportunities to lead. For a long time, I felt like I had to do everything myself to make sure it was done right. Over the past 12 months, I have worked hard to create clear systems and hand off responsibilities so my team can shine in their own strengths.
This shift has created space for me to focus on long-term growth while allowing my team to grow in confidence and leadership. It has been amazing to watch them step up, take ownership, and contribute to the vision of Portfolio. in a different way. Seeing them succeed has been one of the most rewarding parts of this past year.
