We were lucky to catch up with Tasha Land recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tasha, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?
My self discipline comes from having a lot of things to do and not a lot of time. When I was growing up I was very organized and disciplined when it came to my school work. I moved out when I was 18 and going to school while wokring two jobs made me more efficient than I already was. After becoming a mom I had to become even more disciplined and efficient with my time. I tend to have a goal in mind and reverse engineer the results. I work out 4 times a week, I have multiple businesses and also have to be a mom. Staying organized as well as effectively managing my time contributes to my self discipline. I also have to keep my goal in the forefront of my mind for when I don’t feel motivated.
I think the most important thing others can learn from me is to stay determined, focused and disciplined. We can only control what we can control and that is the present moment. It is all the daily habits that create the root system that no one else sees, until they have compounded over and over again and then the results are apparent to others. Knowing this, success comes down to the daily actions and choices we make. We live in a time now where instant gratification is a strong addiction and so a lot of people skip the work because they don’t see results fast enough, not knowing that the big break or success could happen by just doing something one more time. So every day, it’s important to focus on the process of doing things one more time, and before you know it, you’ll look back and see just how far you’ve come.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
When I was 24YO I was esthetician school because I was very unhappy with my corporate job. My plan was to get my esthetician license, work in a spa while going to nursing school, and then work in a med spa doing injections and medical esthetics. While in Esthetician school I started getting my lashes done by a woman who recruited me to work at her lash studio. I got my esthetician license, started working for her and was in nursing school to obtain my BSN. By the age of 26 I decided to leave her lash studio and open my own. A couple years after having Wink Lashes, I opened another lash studio in San Diego, created my first product line Infinit Lash Products, and by 2018 my business has brought in over 1 million dollars. I built a completely custom multimillion home in San Diego with my partner at the time, had my daughter in 2018 and continued to grow and expand my businesses. I dissolved Infinit Lash Products in 2021 to create Evrly Beauty and have begun to focus on mentoring other women in the beauty industry to turn their passion into profit. A lot of people see women as having “little businesses”, especially in the lash industry, not giving credit that building 7 figure empires from these “little businesses” is a possibility. Being minority woman, my mom is Eskimo and German and my dad is Black, and coming from very humble beginnings encourages me to represent what is possible to other girls and women who come from similar backgrounds. Whether it’s being poor, being a minority or both. Empowering women to become financially independent, and teaching them to learn the business and financial aspects of the beauty industry that they occupy has allowed me to share what I have learned in the 10 years of being an entrepreneur with others.
I have online programs launching to help other women along their journey in business as well as plans to expand my product line for lash artists.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Fearlessness, Ambition and discipline. When I first started out on my journey I didn’t even think, “what if this doesnt work”, I just knew that it would. I think pushing out the fear kept me focused on my own capabilities and goals. I was determined to make things work and I put in a lot of effort to make sure it did. Discipline and follow through are also my best friend. A lot of times people give up too quickly and I have a personality of, I’m going to finish what I started.
My advice for others is to not compare your journey to someone else’s because it can be misleading. A lot of times we will think other people are ahead of us, when that may not be the reality. There really isnt any competition becausee there is only one YOU. Have your goal and be open to redirection but still stick to your goals.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
From an early age my parents made me responsible and accountable. They really taught me that if I wanted something I had to work for it. I started cooking when I was 8 and had my own night to cook every week. I had chores when I was really young and started babysitting in middle school to save money for the things I wanted. By high school I had an after-school job so I could pay for my phone bill, car insurance and other things that I wanted. Having a job while juggling school and athletics taught me ti manage my time as well as be responsible because other people relied I me. By the time I moved out when I was 18, I knew how to allocate my time for work and school, as well as how to pay bills and be self sufficient.
