We recently connected with Tatá Batera and have shared our conversation below.
Tatá, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Certainly, I got my work ethic from my parents. As they were always involved with music at our church I could learn from them the fundations of how to be a musician. Basic things like: learn the songs before the rehearsal, be on time, respect others and do everything with commitment and pleasure were taught to me by my parents, with their life example.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a Brazilian drummer who has been living in Los Angeles since the Fall of 2019. I’m well-known for my versatility, as I have worked with artists of all kinds of genres such as reggae, samba, rock, rockabilly, funk, jazz, bossa nova and pop music. I had the opportunity to tour for 2 years all around the USA with The Red Elvises. It was such a great experiance, as a foreigner, to get to know so many different places in this country and play to all sizes of audiences, from small to huge ones. This year I decided to settle down in Los Angeles to start a carreer as a local artist. I’ve been playing with some local artists, such as: Sabine Pothier, Ted Falcon, Justin Chart, Viva Vinson, Chameleon, Gregg Wright, Crazy Tomes, and Lua de Morais. I will be working on 2 new projects this year, one is my jazz trio called Southernwinds. The other is a female band called “SHE!”lead by the great singer Viva Vinson, in which we will pay tribute to legendary women. I’m so excited about what future will bring! So far, it’s been a very challenging and pleasant journey at the same time.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The first quality is to be a reliable person. This quality made me be called to a lot of gigs. It doesn’t matter if you are the best musician if people cannot trust you. The second quality is the ability to follow instructions. It seems obvious but a lot of people don’t do it.
The third quality is to be a versatile musician. It’s very important to learn various styles insted of study only the styles you like, because this will expand your musical vocabulary.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was to support me when I first came to Los Angeles to study at California College of Music in the fall of 2019. I’m so grateful for all the sacrifices they made to keep me financially here, especially during the pandemic because everything was so uncertain for international students. Their sacrifices allowed me to pursue my dreams and I could never do it without their support and love.
